Baker (9-8) returns to action at 3 p.m., Mar. 28 with a home doubleheader against Graceland University. Updated softball stats here.
The Baker baseball team also split a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend with Graceland University. Baker (13-12) opened the weekend with a 7-3 victory over the Yellowjackets. Senior Chris Cummins pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out seven.
Offensively, Baker used a big five-run fifth inning to secure the victory. Steven Stewart went 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead Baker. The Wildcats dropped the second game 6-2 after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. Nathan Wheelock was pegged with the loss after pitching 5.1 innings while giving up three earned runs.
The Wildcats returned to action on Sunday in nonconference competition against Graceland, winning the opener 9-7 and falling in the nightcap 4-2.
The BU baseball team returns to action on Mar. 28 when the Wildcats welcome Missouri Valley College to Sauder Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Updated baseball stats here.
The 2012 Baker Relays highlighted the weekend though overall as Taylor Nall (Men’s Track Athlete of the Week), Tyler Sloan (Women’s Track Athlete of the Week), and Stephanie Nelson (Women’s Field Athlete of the Week) received the weekly Heart of America Athletic Conference weekly awards.
Nall posted a pair of personal bests at the Baker Relays and ran the lead leg on the 4x400 relay squad. A native of Lenexa, Kan., Nall finished first in the 1,500 meters (4:00.27) and placed fifth in the 800 (1:55.60).
Sloan tallied one individual first-place finish while also contributing to a first-place finish in one of the relay races at the Baker Relays last weekend. A freshman from Topeka, Kan., Sloan claimed the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 14.82 before anchoring the victorious 4x100 meter relay team to a time of 49.50.
Nelson competed in four throwing events in her first meet of the outdoor season. A sophomore from Kansas City, Kan., Nelson posted an automatic qualifying mark in the javelin after finishing second with a toss of 43.30 meters. She also recorded personal bests in the discus (39.50) and the hammer throw (36.72) as well as finishing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 12.16 meters. The Baker University tennis teams were also in action this weekend. The Baker men defeated Missouri Baptist College, 8-1 and Tabor College, 6-3. The Baker women fell to Missouri Baptist 5-4.
