Baker splits with Ottawa to open 2012 season
OTTAWA, Kan. – It was damp cold and muggy, but the Baker University softball team opened its 2012 campaign with a split against Ottawa University on Thursday afternoon.
Game one saw Ottawa jump out to an early 4-0 lead over the first two innings, but Baker managed to climb back into the game late, tallying runs in the fourth and sixth innings to make things interesting in the 4-2 loss. Summer Kelley had the lone RBI in the game for the Wildcats. Maggie Holmberg was pegged with the loss after pitching six innings while giving up eight hits and two earned runs.
Game two was all Baker. The Wildcats racked up four runs in the second and third innings and never looked back from that point forward. Kayla Morse finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI’s, including a key double in the third inning. Erin Greenwood also finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Greenwood’s pitching was the story though as she pitched a complete game six-hitter while giving up only one earned run.
Baker (1-1) travels to Fort Worth, Texas next weekend for the Cowtown Classic, where the Wildcats will face some of the top competition in the country.
