Baker knocks off BC

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After dropping back-to-back games last week, the Baker University men’s basketball team bounced back with a key HAAC victory on Thursday evening, defeating local rival Benedictine College, 54-43.

“The guys worked hard all week in practice, this was a big game for us to win and get back on track on our home floor,” said head coach Brett Ballard. “If we can turn the corner after this weekend at 6-3 (in the HAAC) it would put us in a great position heading into next week. Central Methodist will be a good test for us on the road.”

Joe Wachter finished the game as Baker’s leading scorer with 17 points on a 6-for-10 shooting performance from the floor. Ben Steinlage was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 10 points. Jack Shortell led the Wildcats yet again defensively pulling down 11 rebounds with eight points.

Baker (12-7, 5-3 HAAC) outrebounded Benedictine 43-27 overall with a 14-6 advantage on offensive rebounds and 29-21 advantage defensively. The Wildcats also outscored Benedictine 24-10 in the paint, while committing only 13 turnovers in the game.

Benedictine (10-8, 5-2 HAAC) had only one player score in double figures as Quaran Johnson led the Ravens with 13 points.

The Wildcats return to action on Jan. 21 when they travel to Central Methodist University for a 4 p.m., tipoff in Fayette, Mo.
