Newport, Owen and Gebhardt lead Wildcats at Viking/Warrior Open

FREEMONT, Neb. – The Baker University wrestlers continue to pace themselves for a run at the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships. This past weekend the Wildcats traveled to the Viking/Warrior Open in Freemont, Neb., and had three Wildcats finish at the top of their respective weight classes.

Freshman Bo Newport battled through the day with a 7-1 decision in his final match, notching a title in the 125 pound weight class. Junior Parker Owen finished the day 4-0 and was a champion in the 174 pound weight class. Junior Brandon Gebhardt highlighted the day though, recording four first period pins on his way to the 285 pound title.

149 pound Jarell Price and 184 pound Jarid Price finished the tournament third in their respective weight classes. Austin Hamm notched a fifth place finish in the heavyweight class, while Joel Olivas (141 pounds), Colbey Garrison (149 pounds), Nathan Sommer (165 pounds), Robert Shadrach (184 pounds), and Beau Bennett (285 pounds) all finished the tournament with sixth place finishes.

“I’m very happy with the way our team performed,” said assistant wrestling coach Levi Calhoun. “We are continuing to improve and the team is working harder than ever to prepare for the rest of the season.”

The Wildcats have now qualified 25 wrestlers for the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships, set to be held March 1-3 in Des Moines, Iowa.
