Wildcats adopt families through Douglas County Salvation Army

2011 Holiday Shopping

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Champions of Character on the athletic field was an understatement this past weekend, as the Baker men’s basketball, softball, and volleyball team took time to give back to the local community.

Thanks to the help from Baker University public relations director Steve Rottinghaus, the Wildcats were able to go one extra step this holiday season and adopt two families in need.

The Baker student-athletes went shopping at the local Walmart on Sunday evening with the donated money and purchased meaningful gifts to provide to a family that otherwise might have had nothing to put under the Christmas tree come Christmas Day.

“I am very proud of the generosity and effort that the Baker student-athletes and staff put into this cause,” said head men’s basketball coach Brett Ballard. “The men’s basketball team was able to adopt one family through donations from our players and coaches. We also received support from other Baker student-athletes and staff members, which allowed us to adopt a second family. It’s very satisfying knowing that you have student athletes that really care and want to provide for some people that need a little help this Christmas. I think it’s a testament to the type of kids that we have here at Baker.”

The student-athletes will finish up finals on Friday afternoon before heading home for the holiday break.
