Huge first half lifts Baker past Avila 37-20

Baker vs Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Baker University football team got the bounce-back result it needed on Saturday afternoon with a commanding, 37-20 victory over Avila University.

The Wildcats (4-3, 3-3 HAAC) scored 20 points in the first quarter on two touchdown passes from Jake Morse and one rushing score by Kyle Bolton. Andrew Kimry added a field goal in the second quarter, before Morse completed another touchdown pass to Joel Murphy. Avila finally got on the scoreboard with 28 seconds remaining in half on touchdown pass by Jacob Hicks to James Russell.

The Eagles (0-6, 0-4 HAAC) scored just three minutes out of the break on another touchdown pass from Hicks, but Baker proved to be too much down the stretch as running back Scottie Meyer made his return from injury with a rushing touchdown just two plays later.

James Russell added a rushing touchdown for Avila with two minutes remaining in regulation to push the final score to 37-20.

Defensively, Trevor Bosak, Emmerson Clarke, and Steve Sanders all recorded interceptions. Adrian Pearson led the team with 13 tackles.

Offensively, Jake Morse finished the game 20-for-26 with 298 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Hatcher (three receptions and 88 yards) and Jake Green (six receptions and 82 yards with one touchdown) led the ‘Cats receiving core.
