BU Soccer opens 2011 in Salt Lake City

2011 Season Opener

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The fifth ranked Baker women’s soccer team looks to begin its campaign towards Decatur Ala., on Friday afternoon as they face Westminster College (Utah) in the season opener in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Senior Alix Schiraldi led the Wildcats last season with 13 goals, and has high hopes of doing so again in 2011. Maggie Dupes returns in goal after averaging a 1.23 goals against average in 2010. Junior Jordan Dolbin looks to build upon her 2010 postseason performance, as she was named to the NAIA all-tournament team after netting four goals in the postseason.

The Griffins (0-1) have posted a 19-9-1 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field. They have never dropped more than two games in a season and went 5-2-0 at home last year. Westminster plays nine games at home this year including the first five on the slate. Westminster opened the year with a 2-1 loss to Utah Valley on Dumke Field.

Lauren Brophy returns for the Rocky Mountain Bears (1-0) after scoring 10 goals and 23 points in 2010. Morgan Bowe and Kirsty Montignani are also back after each posting 15 points last season. Malin Johansson recorded 67 saves with a 1.02 GAA between the pipes for Rocky.

The Baker men’s soccer team also opens the 2011 campaign on Friday with a matinee against Westminster (Utah) at 4 p.m.

Senior Steven Stewart and Tom Lowndes will look to spark the Wildcats offense. Lowndes led the squad with five goals in 2010, while Stewart led the squad with five assists.

Westminster returns 16 players from the 2010 team that finished 11-8-1. Leading scorer Dennis Sellis is back from an injury after posting 17 points and eight goals last season. Jace Maxfield also returns after scoring five goals and three game-winners in 2010.

The Griffins have posted a 38-11-3 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field. In the past three year Westminster is 19-3-2 at home, including 5-0-1 in 2008. They were 8-2 at home last year and outscored the opposition 14-6 in those 10 contests.

Rocky Mountain went 9-7-0 in 2010 and lost in the semi-finals of the Unaffiliated Tournament.

Oliver Gore returns after scoring 16 goals with 33 points last season. Nick Hefferman also returns after scoring 10 goals while Chris Jeremy is back after a team-best six assists in 2010. Chris Perez made 34 saves with a 1.58 GAA between the pipes for Rocky last year.
