Wildcats split season series with MidAmerica Nazarene

Baseball Winner

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After splitting this past weekend with the Pioneers, Baker (17-20, 10-14 HAAC) managed to do the same on Monday evening on the campus of Baker University.

Nathan Wheelock went the distance in game one pitching a complete game giving up just two earned runs on six hits to lead the Wildcats to a 6-3 victory.

The turning point in the game came in the sixth inning when Matt Abel got the action started with a single up the middle. Joey Orozco kept the momentum rolling with a single off the third base bag into left field and Jared Herbert drove in the game winning runs on a double to deep left-center field. Herbert finished the game going 2-for-2 with three RBI’s.

Jordan Goliat who went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s led MNU’s offense. Starting pitcher Kyle Olsen went four innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits. Tino Luna came on in relief and gave up four runs on five hits in two innings of work.

The Pioneers (28-12, 18-6 HAAC) put together a slow offensive onslaught in game two jumping out to a 3-0 lead early, before adding two more runs in the sixth.

The Wildcat offense woke up in the bottom of the seventh though thanks to timely hitting and defensive errors by MidAmerica Nazarene. The Pioneers held a 5-0 lead heading into the seventh with Justin Huggins on the bump looking for a complete game shutout.

Bryan Kindle got the inning started with a single and Josh Reed followed that up with a single to right field.. Brett Lechien came in to pinch-run, but was caught stealing for the first out of the inning.Taylor Edging

Matt Abel followed that up with a single to deep center, scoring Kindle and advancing Leiker to third. Joey Orozco reached first on a botched double play ball, while Abel was forced out at second and Leiker scored.

Jared Herbert subsequently drew a walk and that left two runners on for Brandon Truitt who hit a deep fly ball to right field that was dropped by Kyle Seagraves to keep the game alive and pushing the score to 5-4. Joshua Zach ended the drama though on a groundout to shortstop that he nearly beat out.

The Wildcats return to action on April 22nd for Senior Day against Graceland at 2:00 p.m. from Sauder Field.
