Baseball and softball teams return to action Friday night


BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball and softball teams will be back in action on Friday night in Baldwin City.

BU baseball is slated to play William Jewell College at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. BU softball will face William Woods University at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The Baker baseball team (10-17, 4-11 HAAC) will look to break out of its four-game losing streak. Brandon Truitt continues to lead the squad offensively with a .418 batting average and 21 RBI’s. Chris Cummins (3-3) will anchor the Cats‘ on the mound as he comes into play with a 3.80 ERA while averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

William Jewell College (21-11, 9-7 HAAC) is coming off a doubleheader split with Benedictine College on April 2nd. David Smith leads the Cardinals offense with a .392 batting average and 14 stolen bases on the year. Drew Mitrisin (6-0) has been steady on the mound with a 1.96 ERA.

The surging Baker softball team will take the field at 5:00 p.m. for a doubleheader with William Woods University.

Baker (20-12, 8-2 HAAC) currently sits in second-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Standings. The Wildcats are coming off a split with Ottawa University on Wednesday evening. Brooke Allen continues to lead the squad offensively with a .408 batting average, while Erin Greenwood leads the team with 19 RBI’s. Maggie Holmberg (8-2) has been a dominate force on the mound with a 1.83 ERA.

William Woods (19-12, 5-5 AMC) comes into play winners in seven of its last eight contests. Lindsey LeCuru leads the Owls offense with a .444 batting average and 30 RBI’s. MacKenzie Bowden (8-4) , the Owls top-ranked pitcher enters play ranked 19th nationally with a 1.14 ERA

“We’re gonna use the non-conference games we played this week to prepare for our big game on Sunday with Lindenwood,” said head coach Matt Windle. “If we could grab a victory or two on Sunday, we’d be alone in first-place in the conference standings.”
