First place in the HAAC on-the-line Friday night

Baker vs MNU

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the first time in recent memory, the Baker Wildcats will be playing for the outright lead in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Baker (15-9, 4-0 HAAC) enters Friday’s contest riding an eight-game winning streak, with hopes of overtaking first place No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University (19-4, 6-0 HAAC).

The Wildcats are coming off a dominating doubleheader sweep against Haskell Indian Nations University on Wednesday evening.  Baker surpassed the single-season homerun record of 18 after Brittany Vollenweider recorded her second homer of the season. Renata Dill and Brooke Allen also recorded round-trippers in the contest.

Pitching will be key for the Wildcats on Friday night, as the Pioneers offense ranks fourth nationally with 1.6 home runs per game, sixth nationally with a 0.618 slugging percentage, ninth nationally with 6.6 runs batted in per game and 11th nationally with a 0.364 team batting average.

Baker ace Maggie Holmberg enters play with sevens wins on the season and a 1.66 ERA. Just last week Holmberg was named HAAC Pitcher of the Week after recording victories over Bethany College (Kan.), William Jewell College (Mo.) and Missouri Valley College. She allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings of work to post a 0.67 ERA for the week.

Brooke Allen continues to lead the Baker offense with a 0.417 batting average; Erin Greenwood leads the team with 14 RBI’s on the year.

First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. from Cavaness Field. Game two will follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
