Baker baseball returns to action Wednesday evening
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Weather permitting, the Baker University baseball team will return to action on Wednesday evening for a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary’s (Kan.). The first pitch is slated for 5 p.m. from Sauder Field.
The Wildcats (9-12, 4-7 HAAC) are coming off a divisional conference victory against Benedictine College on Sunday afternoon. Joshua Zach led the way offensively going 1-for-3 with two RBI’s. After taking a 2-0 lead early, Benedictine closed the gap to a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Baker responded in the sixth scoring two runs and James Gricol closed the game out in the seventh. Chris Cummins pitched six innings giving up one earned run on six hits.
Game two was suspended on Sunday due to poor weather conditions. A make-up date has yet to be determined.
Chris Cummins continues to lead the Baker defense. Cummins is currently ranked No. 1 in the HAAC and No. 19 nationally with an average of 10.86 batters struck out per nine innings. James Gricol has been stellar in relief posting a 0.84 ERA in seven games.
Brandon Truitt leads the Wildcats’ offensive attack with a .431 batting average, good enough for 35th nationally. Jose Orozco currently ranks fourth in the HAAC with a batting average of .393.
St. Mary’s (5-20, 1-7 KCAC) comes into play reeling after dropping 12 of its last 13 games. Baker split with the Spires earlier in the season.
