Wommack and Wachter lead Baker past Benedictine, 55-48

Wommack

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker men’s basketball team continues to ride its hot streak after defeating Benedictine College, 55-48 on Thursday evening for the first time since 2008.

Jaris Wommack led all Baker scorers with 16 points off 7-of-15 shooting from the floor. Joe Wachter added a career-high 10 points and knocked down two clutch free throws in the last 20 seconds to seal the Baker victory.

Baker led by as many as eight points with 50 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Ravens drove back down the court to make a quick basket to cut the score to 51-45.  Benedictine made a three-point field goal with 24 seconds remaining to cut the score to within three. In the end, it was Joe Wachter coming through to seal the game with his two clutch free throws.

“I thought it was a great win for us tonight,” said head coach Brett Ballard. “We didn’t make any big shots tonight, but this was a game we probably wouldn’t have won during the first half of the season. I think we’ve gotten a lot tougher as a team and I couldn’t be more proud of our guys.”

Baker will put its three-game winning streak to the test on Saturday when it travels to No. 10 Lindenwood University for a 4 p.m., showdown in St. Charles.
