Wildcats open up 2011 against Avila University

Baker vs Avila

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Conference play is starting to heat up for the Baker basketball teams. Both basketball teams return to action on Thursday evening when they host Avila University at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. CT respectively.

The Lady Cats‘ (8-6, 3-1 HAAC) are coming off a 1-1 holiday road trip at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cats‘ leading scorer Brittany Hines (14.9 ppg) set the single game scoring record against Southwestern College (Ariz.) netting 34 points while going 7-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Avila University (8-5, 3-1 HAAC) continues to get solid play from Heart of America Athletic Conference leading scorer Alyson Young (21.1 ppg).

The Baker men’s basketball team (5-9, 1-3 HAAC) is coming off a solid 83-73 victory over Bethany College (Kan.) on Monday evening.

Jaris Wommack led all Baker scorers with 31 points while shooting 11-for-15 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Andre Strozier was the only other Wildcat to score in double figures with 13 points and six rebounds.

Bethany College currently leads the Kansas City Athletic Conference (KCAC) with a 3-1 record, something head coach Brett Ballard was well aware of heading into Monday night’s match-up.

“Defeating a quality team on the road is always nice,” Ballard added. “I thought Jaris (Wommack) was terrific, but I’m really proud of the way Corey Anderson played again. He scored seven points coming off a career-high and really filled in the stat sheet nicely.”

Avila University (4-8, 1-3 HAAC) enters play riding a three-game losing streak, with its most recent loss coming to Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Dec. 29th. Quinton Branch leads the Eagles‘ offensively averaging 18.1 points per game.
