With two seconds remaining in regulation, Kansas Wesleyan tried to throw a deep pass, but Sam Kenney picked off the pass and hurled a half-court buzzer-beater that will go down as one of the best game-winning shots in Baker history.
“My man Curvonte (McGown) set me up for that one, once I got the ball I knew I had to get the shot in the air,” Kenney said.
As for the game, Baker did just enough to squeak out the win.
“We’ve gotta get a lot better,” said head coach Brett Ballard. “We have a quick turnaround with the game tomorrow night against Tabor. I’m happy for Sam (Kenney), but we were fortunate to come away with the victory.”
Three players scored in double figures, Sam Kenney (12), Joe Wachter (10) and Jaris Wommack (10). Kansas Wesleyan outrebounded the ‘Cats 45-to-32, but Baker won the turnover battle 22-to-16.
The Wildcats (1-0) return to action Friday evening when they face Tabor College (1-0) at 7 p.m. in Hillsboro, Kan.
