Wildcats prepare for first true road test at Culver-Stockton

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - After having a week off, the Wildcats (1-3, 1-2) will travel to Culver-Stockton College (0-4, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m., kickoff.

Coming off their first win of the season, Baker hopes to continue its offensive output from two weeks ago when they racked up 398 yards of total offense, 233 rushing and 165 in the air.

Freshman Scott Meyer and Aaron Terrill continue to lead the ground attack averaging a combined 87 yards per game with five touchdowns. Freshman Zach Faust leads the air attack averaging 151 yards per game with one touchdown.

Defensively the Wildcats have been solid. Three Wildcats sit atop the conference standings in tackles per game: Matt Brock (12.8), Adam Steele (9.3) and Colton Miller (9). Michael Faison and Kyle Weinmaster rank fourth in the conference with three sacks on the season.Thoren

“Defensively what we’re doing well right now is playing a lot of different people,” said defensive coordinator Jason Thoren. “We’ve had to mix and match what guys have been asked to do. They’re really getting a feel for team defense and beginning to mesh together well.”

As for special teams, Sophomore Xavier Lewis was the highlight two weeks ago when he returned an Avila kickoff 99-yards four a touchdown tying a school record set by Gary Stauffer ’64 and Derrick Watts ’88.  Lewis was also named HAAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Lewis is averaging 35.2 yards per return.

“I think this is good timing to take a young team on the road,” said head coach Mike Grossner. “We’ll gain some experience playing in a must win situation. Culver is going come out hungry know it’s their homecoming.”

The Wildcats lead the overall series 27-3. Their last defeat came in 2006 when they dropped a 20-17 decision in Canton, Mo.

’07 BU graduate and former long snapper Tanner Purdum was featured in the Sept. 30th addition of The Wall Street Journal. The full article can be viewed by clicking here.

Eight inches of rain and a sloppy field was no contest for the Baker University football team. In their first Heart of America Athletic Conference game of the season in 2008, Baker beat Culver-Stockton 28-0 in the "mud bowl" in Canton, Mo. View the box score here.
