Evangel and Baker set to battle with first place on the line

Volleyball Preview

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker (11-7, 2-0) and Evangel (11-5, 1-0) will square off on Tuesday evening at the George F. Collins Center for a key early-season HAAC showdown.

Still fresh on the minds of the Baker players is last season’s heartbreaking defeat to the Crusaders in the second round of the HAAC playoffs. Evangel swept the Wildcats 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-11) en route to its first HAAC conference tournament championship and its first NAIA national tournament appearance.

“We were always a program that was on the edge of going a long way but couldn’t quite get there,” Evangel head coach Mary Whitehead said. “To have finally accomplished what we did last year was awesome. The girls have that experience now and they are hungry to get there again.”

The Wildcats have a similar outlook after finishing last season 32-4 overall with a 9-1 conference mark.

“We put together a tougher schedule this season,” said Wildcat head coach Kathy Allen, whose Wildcats have faced seven top-25 programs. “I think we are ready for conference play to begin. Our team is excited.”

Senior Brooke Pryor continues to lead the offensive attack. Pryor has amassed 245 kills on the season, ranking her fifth nationally. Setter Jana Boss ranks 13th nationally with 572 total assists.

Junior libero Brooke Allen leads the team defensively with 343 total digs and is sixth nationally.

The Wildcats will be back in action on their home court Friday, when they face Culver-Stockton College at 7 p.m.
