Baker soccer heads to KC to face Rockhurst on Friday

Tom Lowndes led the Baker men with two goals last weekend.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – This weekend, Baker soccer will continue its four-match road stretch in the KC metro area on Friday, Sept. 3 at Rockhurst University.

The first weekend of the season saw an exciting 2-0 roadtrip for the No. 24 Baker men, while the No. 17 Baker women finished 1-1. Tom Lowndes led the Baker men with two goals in their victories over Southern Nazarene University and Oklahoma Christian University.

“We had a good start in our opening weekend, we’ll get a good test from Rockhurst on Friday night,” said head coach Nate Houser. “Monday will be a good measuring stick for us to see if we can play with No. 15 Hastings.”

Christine Janssens scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Southern Nazarene and continued the offensive attack on Saturday when she tallied two goals in a 3-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian. Janssens was named BU Female Player of the Week on Sunday evening. Colton Miller (football) took home the honors on the men’s side.

“Christine played great this past weekend, Haley Oborny and Chelsea Dunn were solid in our backfield,” said head coach Nate Houser. “Hopefully we can get Alix Schiraldi going this weekend heading into our home opener on Monday with Hastings College.”

The Rockhurst women’s soccer team enters the 2010 season with seven returning starters. Senior forward Abby Davidson leads the Lady Hawks into 2010 after scoring a team-high seven goals last season. The Hawks were picked eighth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Few coaches in all of college athletics can boast a more impressive record than Rockhurst men’s soccer coach Tony Tocco. His 574 career victories ranks first among active intercollegiate coaches and third on the all-time coaching list.

8-10-0 in 2009, the Rockhurst men look to rebound in 2010. The Hawks were picked sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
