Volleyball and soccer finish successful first weekend

POINT LOMA, Calif. – The Baker University Volleyball team finished up 2-2 over the weekend at the Seaside Invitation in Point Loma, Calif.

Friday afternoon the Wildcats were defeated 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 23-25) by No. 3 California Baptist University. Offensively, Jana Boss and Brooke Pryor led the way. Boss recorded 34 assists while Pryor had 14 kills.

“I thought we played very tough. These were some talented teams out here, I think we proved to ourselves that we can compete with anyone in the country,” said head coach Kathy Allen.

Friday evening highlighted the weekend for the Wildcats when they knocked off No. 14 Point Loma Nazarene on their own home court 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22). Pryor and Boss led the way again recording 12 kills and 25 assists respectively.

“The difference from our 2009 squad is the fact that Jana (Boss) doesn’t have to necessarily worry about who she is setting the ball to, we’ve got a few more options this year,” coach Kathy Allen said.

Savannah Smith, a transfer from Harding University is providing more depth at the outside hitter position, Smith recorded 26 kills on the weekend. Christina Delladio also added to the offensive attack with 23 kills.

Saturday afternoon the Wildcats defeated San Diego Christian University 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-18), before falling to No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) 0-3  (15-25, 14-25, 22-25) in the afternoon.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The nationally ranked Baker soccer teams traveled to Southern Nazarene University on Friday afternoon and Oklahoma Christian University on Saturday.

The No. 17 Baker women were upset by Southern Nazarene University on Friday, 2-1. The Crimson Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes and never looked back.

Christine Janssens scored the lone goal with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Saturday afternoon the Wildcats were back to form. After playing a scoreless first half, the Wildcats scored three goals in the second half to claim a 3-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian University.

Christine Janssens and Jordan Dolbin led the offensive attack. Janssens recorded the first goal early in the second half while Dolbin recorded her first goal as a Wildcat with just five minutes remaining in the game. Janssens recorded a final goal to give Baker the 3-0 victory in the final minute.

The No. 24 Baker men’s soccer team lived up to its early preseason hype, defeating Southern Nazarene University 2-1 on Friday afternoon, and Oklahoma Christian University 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

Tom Lowndes led the Wildcats recording two goals and two assists in the opening weekend.

Both teams will be back in action Friday evening Sept. 4 when they travel to Rockhurst University at 5:00 p.m. CST and 7:30 p.m. CST
