Baker men take fourth at Missouri Valley Invitational, women grab second

MARSHALL, Mo. - The Baker men's golf team traveled to Marshall, Mo., this past weekend to participate in their second 36-holeIndian Foothills Golf Course tournament event of the 2010 season.

With the golf course in good shape, Sunday evening thunderstorms and another Monday morning thunderstorm dropped several inches of the rain on the golf course making for wet and soggy conditions. After a weather delay on Monday morning, the first-round got underway. The clouds were replaced with sunny and warm conditions.

The Baker men didn't play up to their standards on day one. "They didn't play with the appropriate patience and good golf course management," stated head coach Karen Exon. "We had the high team score of the day," Exon said.

Tuesday's round saw warm and very windy conditions with winds from the southwest at 25-30 mph with gusts over 40 mph. The windy conditions saw individual and team scores rise, although the Baker men posted an identical team score of 329. Gavin Tatrn (Topeka, Kan.) led the Baker squad with solid rounds of 80-79 for a two-day total of 159. Tatrn posted one of only 5 individual rounds in the 70's on the second day as the Baker men managed to beat the William Jewell squad by one stroke.

Baker will be back in action at the annual Baker University Spring Invitational at Alvarmar Golf Club, April 21-22. In the meantime the men will play an intra-squad tournament designed to work on golf course management in order to determine seeding for the BU spring tournament.

Baker women grab second-place at Missouri Valley

MARSHALL, Mo. - The Baker women have finally gotten a spring golf tournament under their belt after a long and snowy winter. The BU Women played the Missouri Valley College tournament, a two-day 36-hole tournament, short-handed on account of injury and illness. Junior Dani Weimholt stayed home with a thumb injury and freshman Bristol Brandt had strep throat.

Monday’s round was delayed an hour by a thunderstorm which dumped nearly an inch of rain on an already wet and soggy golf course. The Baker women played Monday like it was their first round of the spring as they lost 22 strokes to the Avila team. Impressive was Baker’s comeback on Tuesday in very windy conditions with some gusts in the 35-45 mph range as they beat Avila in the second round by 5 strokes. Consequently the Baker women finished the tournament in second place to Avila University.

Stacy Yowell led the team with back-to-back 88s and earned 4th place on the All-Tournament team. Junior Krista Yaktine struggled on Monday with a round of 95 but came back Tuesday with a solid 88. Senior Amelia Harshfield brought steady play in the 90s both days. Freshman Haley Knowland struggled Monday but played 8 strokes better on Tuesday when conditions were difficult with the wind.

The Baker women play again this coming Monday-Tuesday at the Park University spring tournament at The National Golf Course in Kansas City-Deuce Golf Course.
