Baker track and field highlights weekend events

The Baker 4x100 relay team set a new school record at ESU.

Track and Field

The Baker track and field teams were back in action this weekend when they traveled to the ESU State Farm Relays in Emporia, Kan. The teams didn't dissapoint. The Baker men's 4x100 team (Hannon, Harris, Anderson, Okiomah) set a new school record with a time of 42.12, surpassing the previous record of 42.65 set in 2006 by Randle, Hubbard, Gleason, and Pitts at the Simpson Invitational.

JL Anderson and Jeremiah May were also successful in qualifying for the 2010 NAIA Outdoor National Championships with their respective performances in the 100 meter hurdles and javelin.

Junior Mary Loveland highlighted things on the women's side taking second-place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19.37.26. Junior Carrie Lister took second-place in the women's shot-put recording a mark of 12.30 meters.

The Baker University baseball team picked up its second doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats (11-12, 7-5) are entering the core of HAAC play in the coming weeks. Baker will be back in action


Monday afternoon when they travel to Benedictine College to finish up the season series with the Ravens.

Offensively, Jared Herbert and Nick Peterson have had the hot bats for the Wildcats. Herbert currently owns a .375 batting average while Peterson has provided the offensive punch with 19 RBIs on the season.

Sophomore LHP Chris Cummins has lived up to his preseason billing. Cummins currently owns a 3-0 record with a 2.83 era. This past week Cummins had two complete-game victories against Graceland and Benedictine.

The Baker softball team (10-20, 2-6) was finally able to get out on their home field Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats split a doubleheader with Benedictine College and dropped a doubleheader with Ottawa University on Saturday.Heather Gruber

Brooke Allen leads the Wildcats offensively with 36 hits and a .356 batting average. Freshman Heather Gruber (pictured) has been all you can ask for in her rookie season. Gruber has currently owns an 8-9 record with 115 innings pitched.

The Wildcats will be back in action Monday afternoon on their home field at 4:00 p.m., when they take on William Jewell College (9-15, 2-2) in a key HAAC doubleheader.

Men/Women Tennis

Both Baker tennis teams have finally been able to get outside after some poor weather to start the 2010 season. The Baker men's Danielle Griggstennis team currently owns a 2-1 record with victories against Friends University and Missouri Baptist College. The women's tennis team currently owns a 2-2 overall match record with victories against Morningside College and Friends University.

Saturday afternoon saw both teams back in action in Baldwin City when they squared off with Bethel College. Both the men and women dropped their matches 6-3. Detailed results will be available later in the week.

Get out and watch some tennis aciton this week. Both Baker tennis teams will be in action Monday afternoon against Tabor College at 4:00 p.m, and Tuesday afternoon against conference foe Missouri Valley College at 4:00 p.m, as well.
