Baker splits doubleheader with Benedictine
- Brooke Allen leads the Wildcats with a .372 batting average and .436 slugging %.
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker women's softball team finally got its chance to play in front of their own fans on Thursday afternoon. Baker won the first game 4-3 and dropped the nightcap 10-4.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in game one thanks to an RBI single and solo home run from sophomore Allie Losey. The lead didn't last. Benedictine scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to even the score at 2-2. But the Wildcats had a flare for the dramatic. Baker won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning courtesy of a single up-the-middle by junior Annie Hannon.
Freshman Heather Gruber (8-8) pitched a complete game while giving up only seven hits and one earned run in the 4-3 victory.
Game two saw the offense explode for Benedictine. The Ravens scored 10 runs and racked up 15 hits in the 10-4 split-victory.
Offensively Brooke Allen continues to swing a hot bat. Allen went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the loss.
"Even though we split, the good outweighed the bad. I think we've got some good things coming on the horizon," stated head coach Matt Windle.
Baker will be back in action this weekend when they travel to local rival Ottawa University for a 1:00 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
