Baker baseball splits weekend series with Mount Mercy
Baseball Team

The Wildcats earned a split this past weekend with Mount Mercy

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker University baseball team split the weekend series with Mount Mercy, and now looks forward to a key home series with conference foe Culver-Stockton College on Wednesday afternoon.

In its first doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, Baker came back from five runs down to grab its second win of the 2010 campaign.

Senior Nick Peterson led the way offensively going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI's and a double. The Wildcats scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately seal the game.

In game two on Saturday, the Wildcats were never able to get anything going offensively. Sophomore Nathan Wheelock allowed three runs on eight hits while walking four in the 4-1 loss.

Mount Mercy escaped with a victory in the first game on Sunday afternoon. Steven Stewart led the Baker offense going 3-for-4 with one RBI in the 4-3 loss. Senior Dustin Moomau pitched six innings giving up four runs on three hits.

Baker picked up its third victory of the season in the nightcap on Sunday. The Wildcats scored a key run in the sixth inning while Sean McAlister pitched two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory. Bryce Daily led the Wildcats offensively going 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's.

Baker women fall in second round of HAAC Playoffs

Brittany Hines

Brittany Hines will return to a stacked 2010-11 Baker squad.

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Baker women's basketball team saw its HAAC Tournament run end in the semifinal round after suffering a 73-59 loss to William Jewell College Saturday night.

The loss marks the second time this season that Baker (18-12) has fallen to William Jewell (25-7) - a 66-52 loss back on Feb. 18 in Baldwin City, Kan., being the first.

Baker struggled with its offense throughout the game, as a team the Wildcats made just 23 of its 55 (41 percent) field goal attempts. Turnovers also played a key role, as the Wildcats turned the ball over a season-high 26 times.

William Jewell on the other hand, went 8-for-23 (34 percent) from the field in the first half, but shot lights out in the second half going 16-for-26 (61 percent) to ultimately seal the victory for the Cardinals.

Emily Gibson and Aubree Gustin led the way offensively scoring 16 and 11 points respectively.

The Wildcats will have much to look forward to in 2010-11. Baker will return all five starters, along with most of its reserves.
