Wildcat assistant coach to be honored with courage award

Baldwin City, Kan. — Baker University assistant women’s basketball coach Richard Ebel (pictured) will be honored by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association as the recipient of the Don Jones Memorial Coaches Courage Award for his recent battle with cancer.

Ebel, a successful high school coach in basketball, track and cross country before joining the Wildcat staff in 2007, will be recognized during a reception at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Lee Arena on the Washburn University campus in Topeka.

Ebel served as a teacher and coach in Kansas for 40 years before joining Baker’s coaching staff two years ago. His coaching stops include Moline, Canton-Galva, Andale, Sedgwick, Rose Hill, Highland Park, Wellsville, Paola and Baldwin. In 2006, he received a 400-win plaque from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. He and his wife, Priscilla, and adult children, Carissa, and Toby, live in Baldwin City. Priscilla works at the Collins Library on the Baker campus. Toby is a Web services administrator at Baker.
