The tournament featured a total of 238 golfers, an increase of 66 golfers from 2012 and was played at the prestigious Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan.
With the help of the Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament committee including Director of Alumni and Corporate Relations, Doug Barth, Assistant Director of Athletics – Operations, Andrew Patch, Director of Athletics, Theresa Yetmar, Assistant Director of Athletics – Communications, Tyler Price and Athletic Department Interns, Savannah Smith and Ben Wilson, the golf tournament raised a record $35,000, an increase of $8,000 from the 2012 Wildcat Classic and all proceeds will benefit the Baker Athletics department.
"As the Wildcat Classic continues to grow, I'm always excited to see who wants to be involved," said Barth. "Whether it's alumni coming back to play and see old friends or the look on our sponsors faces when they see how many golfers have signed up to play to our many volunteers who help us put on a top notch golf tournament. I think Baker is truly blessed that we have so many wonderful people involved with our tournament and I'm incredibly excited to see where we go from here."
The tournament also featured a silent and live auction with 67 items including gifts such as a Tony Gonzalez autographed jersey, KC Royals, KC Chiefs and Sporting KC ticket packages, hotel packages and golf foursomes to some of the top golf courses in the KC metro area.
"The Wildcat Classic is one of my favorite events of the year," said Yetmar. "It gives our alumni, donors, friends, coaches and student-athletes an opportunity to spend quality time together in a relaxed environment. The atmosphere is always one of celebration for a common cause - the recognition of our current success and continued support for the future of our athletic programs.
"The funds raised through this event will make a significant impact on all of our athletic programs and help us continue to compete at a championship caliber. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this event such a success. It was truly a team effort."
"It was fantastic seeing young alumni out on the course," said Patch. "Many of them are just a couple years removed from BU, but they still see the importance of staying involved and giving back.
"My golf group consisted of other young football alumni. We value the time that we had at Baker and are thankful for the support that BU alums gave us when we were undergraduates. We wanted to pay it forward and the golf tournament is a way for us to reunite as friends and give money to a great cause.
"There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to coordinating a golf tournament of this size. It takes a team effort on all fronts. The Alvamar staff did an excellent job coordinating this event to ensure that our guests had a truly enjoyable experience. Many of our Baker volunteers are current student-athletes. They helped run several of our hole contests and it's always special when you can unite past and present student-athletes."
