BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team finished its non-conference schedule on Wednesday evening, splitting a doubleheader with the University of St. Mary.
Five Baker players recorded two hits in game one as the Wildcats dropped an extra inning affair, 3-2 in ten innings. Brandon Truitt and Bryan Kindle were the only Wildcats to record RBI’s in the contest.
Five pitchers took the mound in game one, with Zach Durr pitching three innings giving up no hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts. Sean McAlister pitched two scoreless innings, but the game opened up late. Baker gave up two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but St. Mary’s scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on a play at the plate where Jose Orozco’s throw from right field was just a few inches off from keeping the game deadlocked.

First place in the HAAC on-the-line Friday night
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the first time in recent memory, the Baker Wildcats will be playing for the outright lead in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Baker (15-9, 4-0 HAAC) enters Friday’s contest riding an eight-game winning streak, with hopes of overtaking first place No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University (19-4, 6-0 HAAC).
The Wildcats are coming off a dominating doubleheader sweep against Haskell Indian Nations University on Wednesday evening. Baker surpassed the single-season homerun record of 18 after Brittany Vollenweider recorded her second homer of the season. Renata Dill and Brooke Allen also recorded round-trippers in the contest.

Victory over No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene highlights the weekend
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to make huge strides under second-year head coach Matt Windle.
Friday night saw the Wildcats defeat No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University in an extra inning affair that ended on a bases-loaded bean ball in the tenth inning.
Maggie Holmberg was stellar yet again pitching ten innings of shutout ball while giving up just five hits in the 1-0 victory. She currently owns a team-best 8-1 record with a 1.61 ERA.

Softball set to host Avila University Tuesday evening
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Wildcat softball team will return to action Tuesday evening when it hosts Avila University (6-21, 1-5 HAAC) for a 5 p.m. doubleheader from Cavaness Field.
Baker (17-11, 6-2 HAAC) is coming off a weekend where they split conference doubleheaders with No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene and Benedictine College. The Wildcats are currently tied for fourth-place in the HAAC Standings with Evangel University.
Avila comes into the contest in ninth-place in the HAAC Standings, with only one win thus far in conference play. The Eagles ended a five-game skid with a 3-0 victory over Culver-Stockton College on April 3rd.

Track and Field makes strides at Enduro Classic
WICHITA, Kan. – The Baker University track and field team had eight individuals take home gold medals this past weekend at the Enduro Classic, held on the campus of Friends University in Wichita, Kan.
Jeremiah Korn led the way in the men’s shot put with a toss of 15.35 meters to outdistance Paul Rotering of McPherson by .14 meters.
Aaron Hannon won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.06, JL Anderson followed close behind taking second-place with a time of 15.19. Hannon also took second-place in the men’s javelin throw with a mark of 53.27 meters.

Home runs power Baker past Avila University
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to roll as it defeated Avila University in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Cavaness Field.
Game one saw Baker (19-11, 8-2 HAAC) take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before adding two more runs in the third. Avila battled back to score one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game before Baker was finally able to seal the game in the bottom of the sixth on an Erin Greenwood single.

Baker dance team headed to NCA/NDA College Nationals
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Baker University small dance team will be performing at the NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship. This year’s event will be held at The Band Shell/Ocean Center/Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida April 7-10.
The team automatically qualified for the event after taking second-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships. Cheer and Dance remains an emerging sport in the NAIA, but head dance coach Lynsey Payne knows this competition could mean big things in the long run.

Baseball and softball teams return to action Friday night
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball and softball teams will be back in action on Friday night in Baldwin City.
BU baseball is slated to play William Jewell College at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. BU softball will face William Woods University at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The Baker baseball team (10-17, 4-11 HAAC) will look to break out of its four-game losing streak. Brandon Truitt continues to lead the squad offensively with a .418 batting average and 21 RBI’s. Chris Cummins (3-3) will anchor the Cats‘ on the mound as he comes into play with a 3.80 ERA while averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
