Men’s golf opens spring season with seventh-place finish

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Baker University men’s golf team competed in its first spring tournament of the year this past weekend, hosted by Evangel University at the Rivercut Golf Club.

Friday’s round saw temperatures in the mid 30’s with 25 mph winds. Players had to deal with intermittent rain showers throughout play, before the sun finally peaked out late in the day.

Baker track takes first place in five events at Baker Relays

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The cool weather didn’t stop the Baker University track and field team from opening the outdoor season with a bang on Friday afternoon.

Aubree Gustin, Corinna Papps, JaBryanna Wellington, Mary Loveland and the women’s 4x800 meter relay team all came away with first-place finishes at the 2011 Baker Relays.

Maggie Holmberg named HAAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Baker freshman pitcher Maggie Holmberg (Topeka, Kan.) was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Pitcher of the Week, according to an announcement by league officials on Monday afternoon.

Holmberg went 3-0 over the past week with victories over Bethany College (Kan.), William Jewell College (Mo.) and Missouri Valley College. She allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings of work to post a 0.67 ERA for the week. She closed out the week with a complete game shutout against Missouri Valley College on Sunday afternoon in Baldwin City, Kan.

Baker baseball returns to action Wednesday evening

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Weather permitting, the Baker University baseball team will return to action on Wednesday evening for a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary’s (Kan.). The first pitch is slated for 5 p.m. from Sauder Field.

The Wildcats (9-12, 4-7 HAAC) are coming off a divisional conference victory against Benedictine College on Sunday afternoon. Joshua Zach led the way offensively going 1-for-3 with two RBI’s. After taking a 2-0 lead early, Benedictine closed the gap to a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Baker responded in the sixth scoring two runs and James Gricol closed the game out in the seventh. Chris Cummins pitched six innings giving up one earned run on six hits.

Wildcats roll to victory over Haskell Indian Nations University

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker women’s softball team continues to ride a hot streak after sweeping Haskell Indian Nations in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening for its eighth-straight victory.

Game one saw the Wildcats jump out to an early lead from which they never looked back. Baker plated six runs in the second inning thanks hot hitting and poor fielding by Haskell.

Katie Worley led the Wildcats going 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBI’s. Maggie Holmberg, Erin Greenwood and Kim Gilges all chipped in with RBI’s.

Split with St. Mary's

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team finished its non-conference schedule on Wednesday evening, splitting a doubleheader with the University of St. Mary.

Five Baker players recorded two hits in game one as the Wildcats dropped an extra inning affair, 3-2 in ten innings. Brandon Truitt and Bryan Kindle were the only Wildcats to record RBI’s in the contest.

Five pitchers took the mound in game one, with Zach Durr pitching three innings giving up no hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts. Sean McAlister pitched two scoreless innings, but the game opened up late. Baker gave up two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but St. Mary’s scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on a play at the plate where Jose Orozco’s throw from right field was just a few inches off from keeping the game deadlocked.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the first time in recent memory, the Baker Wildcats will be playing for the outright lead in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Baker (15-9, 4-0 HAAC) enters Friday’s contest riding an eight-game winning streak, with hopes of overtaking first place No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University (19-4, 6-0 HAAC).

The Wildcats are coming off a dominating doubleheader sweep against Haskell Indian Nations University on Wednesday evening.  Baker surpassed the single-season homerun record of 18 after Brittany Vollenweider recorded her second homer of the season. Renata Dill and Brooke Allen also recorded round-trippers in the contest.

Victory over No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene highlights the weekend

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to make huge strides under second-year head coach Matt Windle.

Friday night saw the Wildcats defeat No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University in an extra inning affair that ended on a bases-loaded bean ball in the tenth inning.

Maggie Holmberg was stellar yet again pitching ten innings of shutout ball while giving up just five hits in the 1-0 victory. She currently owns a team-best 8-1 record with a 1.61 ERA.
