2003 Football Coaches
In just six years, head coach John Frangoulis has compiled 38
wins and three bowl game appearances. Frangoulis led the Wildcats to the
post season Wheat Bowl in his first season, the post-season KWTO Bowl
in 2000 and to the Wheat Bowl in 2001.
Before being named Baker's head coach in 1996, Frangoulis was the Wildcats'
defensive coordinator for three seasons. The defense was nationally-ranked
in each of those seasons. Frangoulis coached high school football in Missouri
for three years in the 1970's before coaching at Northwest Missouri State
University, Dodge City Community College, the University of Missouri,
the University of California-Santa Barbara and Independence Community
College. Frangoulis earned his bachelor's degree in physical education
at Southeast Missouri State University and his master's degree in physical
education from Northwest Missouri State.
Lance
Corbin begins his eighth year as Baker's defensive coordinator. Prior
to joining the Wildcat staff, Corbin was defensive coordinator at Ottawa
University. He also has coached at Northwest Missouri State University,
his alma mater, and Emporia State University. Frangoulis said Corbin's
knowledge of all positions is one of his greatest strengths. Corbin was
an all-conference defensive lineman in college and also has playing experience
as a linebacker, and he coached defensive backs at Emporia State and Baker.
Marc
Bergan is starting his second year as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks
coach at Baker. The 'Cats improved in nearly all offensive categories
during his first year despite having to adjust to a new system. He previously
was a head coach at Dakota State University for two years and an offensive
coordinator before that. Bergan also has experience coaching football
in Switzerland, at Northwest Missouri State University and at Postville
High School in Iowa. Frangoulis said Bergan's ability to mix pass and
run plays successfully and his communication with players are two of his
greatest strengths.
Hank Spellman is in his seventh year at Baker, but has coached
football for over 30 years. He will coach linebackers and handle administrative
duties. Spellman coached at the high school level in Missouri for three
decades. Players often seek out the charismatic Spellman to talk to, Frangoulis
said.
Bruce Young begins his fourth year and will coach running backs
again this season. Wildcat running backs lost only two fumbles in 325
carries last year under Young's leadership. Young was a head high school
football coach in Missouri for 28 years and is a member of the Missouri
Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Brian Boyle will coach the defensive line, a place where he earned
all-conference as a Wildcat in 1994. This will be Boyle's seventh year
at Baker. Frangoulis said Boyle is a great communicator and has a terrific
understanding of Baker's traditions after living it as a player.
Tony Hein will coach the offensive line in his fourth season
at Baker. It will be his second year as offensive line coach. Like Boyle,
Hein lived Baker's football tradition as a player in the late 1990s. "He's
a young coach and he has really developed," Frangoulis said.
Everest Martin is in his second season at Baker as a wide receiver
coach. He played tight end at South Dakota. "He works very hard and is
the type of coach who accepts nothing less than 110-percent from his players,"
Frangoulis said.
Jeff Snyder begins his second season at Baker as an outside linebacker
coach. He played collegiate football at Hutchinson Community College and
Kansas University, and saw playing time in all 11 games at KU in 2001.
He was named Special Teams MVP for the Jayhawks and was also All-Academic
Big XII. Snyder oversaw the 'Cats off-season weightlifting program.
Jerry Aligo returned to Baker in 2002 to instruct tight ends
after 17 years of coaching high school football. As a defensive tackle
for McPherson College, he made the all-conference and NAIA all-District
10 teams. He was a coach at Baker in the late 1980s and early 1990s. "He's
real good with our tight ends," Frangoulis said.
Kevin Fitzgerald gained experience at a variety of positions
as a Wildcat from 1999 to 2002 before becoming a student assistant coach.
The product of nearby Olathe South High School played seven different
positions at Baker.
Scott Lane was a three-year starter at fullback for the 'Cats
before becoming a student assistant coach this season. He was known for
his toughness.
Mark Miller will be a student assistant for the Wildcats after
capping a stellar senior season. He was named Defensive MVP for Baker
last season and was named first-team All-Heart of America Athletic Conference
as a defensive lineman. He started on the defensive line for three years.
