Watkins explodes for career-high 33 points Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence continued his scoring tear with a career-high 33 points in a 78-72 loss to Haskell Indian Nations University Feb. 18 in Baldwin City. Watkins has had two 26-point games this season, but now has the only 30-point game by a Wildcat this season. He made 10 field goals, three three-pointers and 10 free throws and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Senior point guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka added 12 points with nine assists and just two turnovers. Guard play leads Wildcats against Eagles Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence took care of scoring and senior guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka took care of everything else in a 61-51 loss to Central Methodist College Feb. 17 in Fayette, Mo. Watkins scored 18 points with four three-pointers to lead all scorers, and McDonnell had a game-high seven assists and a team-high eight rebounds with just two turnovers. Senior center Pedro Dos Santos blocked four shots and grabbed two steals to go with his six points and five rebounds. Watkins has averaged 17.3 points per game in the last three contests. Baker will get a break from Heart of America Athletic Conference competition to host Haskell Indian Nations University Feb. 18, and will conclude the regular season by hosting Culver-Stockton College on Feb. 21. Second-half scoring burst not enough for 'Cats Baker's offense outscored Graceland with 46 points in the second half but couldn't erase the deficit in an 80-73 loss Feb. 14 in Lamoni, Iowa. Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence scored 19 points to lead all scorers. Senior center Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, added 13 points with 11 coming in the second half. Freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe had his sixth consecutive game of three or more three-pointers and scored 15 points.
Feb. 12 Tenbrink, young guards lead way to 70-58 win This time, the shoot-out between two of the conference's top young shooters had a clear-cut winner. Freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe made five three-pointers for 15 points and fellow freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence added another 15 as Baker defeated Lindenwood 70-58 Feb. 12 in Baldwin City. In the previous match-up between the two teams on Jan. 15 in St. Charles, Mo., Lindenwood sophomore guard Justin Shrake scored 29 points in a shoot-out with Redeker, who had 26 points and six three-pointers. Baker emerged victorious on a last-second offensive rebound and put-back by senior center Pedro Dos Santos. Shrake, the Heart of America Athletic Conference's leading scorer (19.5 points per game) and long-range shooter (3.23 three-point field goals made per game), was held to just three points in the rematch. Redeker extended his long-range scoring burst to six games. During that stretch, he has made 27 of 55 three-pointers and averaged 15.3 points per game while rising to fourth in the conference in three-point field goals made per game. He has made at least four three-pointers in each game. Senior forward Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden had a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season. Senior point guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka added eight points and a season-high 10 assists. Dos Santos blocked three shots.
Feb. 9 Flett explodes for 25 versus Evangel Junior forward Josh Flett of Wellsville took advantage of a starting role with a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds in an 86-73 loss to Evangel Feb. 9 in Springfield, Mo. In his last two games, Flett has totaled 41 points and 17 rebounds since earning a starting position. Senior guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka scored 13 points, handed out seven assists and grabbed two steals, and freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe again provided outside scoring with four three-pointers for 12 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. The Wildcats made 52-percent of their field goals.
Feb. 7 Redeker, Flett lead way on Wellsville Night Freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe scored 24 points and junior forward Josh Flett of Wellsville added 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Wildcats celebrated Wellsville Night in a 67-56 loss to Avila Feb. 7 in Baldwin City. Wellsville is a town of about 2,000 less than 10 miles from Baldwin City and is the home of Flett and freshman guard Evan Wright. Flett drew his first start since Jan. 5 and had his best game of the year. His 10 rebounds is his season-high and his 16 points is the most since the season-opener Nov. 1. Wright played 22 minutes and had three assists. Redeker lit up yet another defense with five three-pointers versus Avila. In the last four games, he has made 18 of 36 shots from behind the arc and averaged 16.3 points per game. Feb. 2 Freshmen Redeker, Thompson shine versus Ravens Freshmen guard Darin Redeker of Olpe again lit up Benedictine outside and freshman center Ross Thompson of Ottawa was nearly perfect inside as Baker fell 83-62 to the Ravens Jan. 2 in Atchison. Redeker made six three-pointers for 18 points as Baker defeated Benedictine 69-67 Jan. 5 in Baldwin City. In the rematch, Redeker tallied 14 points with four three-pointers. In the last three games, Redeker has scored all but two of his 41 points on three-point field goals. Thompson made six of seven field goals to lead the Baker front court. Senior forward Luke Harris of Dodge City had a game-high six rebounds.
Jan. 31 Freshmen guards step up again versus Jewell Freshman guards DJ Watkins of Lawrence and Darin Redeker of Olpe combined for 31 points and six three-pointers but couldn't upset William Jewell College Jan. 31 in Baldwin City. The Cardinals are ranked sixth nationally with a 22-3 record. Watkins led the 'Cats with 19 points. Redeker, for the second consecutive game, scored all of his points on three-pointers with four versus Jewell for 12 points. The 'Cats had a season-high nine steals as a team, with Redeker and senior guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka grabbing two apiece. McDonnell had five assists.
Jan. 29 McDonnell near perfect with 16 points, 8 assists Senior point guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka didn't show any rust after a five-day break with 16 points and eight assists in a 90-73 loss to MidAmerica Nazarene University Jan. 29 in Olathe, Kan. McDonnell made seven of nine field goals and both of his three-pointers and had just two turnovers against the Pioneers, who remained undefeated in the Heart of America Athletic Conference after 12 games and are ranked fifth nationally. Baker's freshman guard duo of Olpe's Darin Redeker and Lawrence's DJ Watkins again provided long-range scoring. Redeker made five three-pointers for 15 points and Watkins had 12 points and four steals. Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had 11 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Jan. 24 Five 'Cats score in double-figures in 82-74 win Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence led a quintet of Wildcats in double figures with 26 points as Baker defeated Missouri Valley College 82-74 Jan. 24 in Baldwin City. The win avenged a 93-90 loss to the Vikings Dec. 2 in Marshall, Mo., Baker's first Heart of America Athletic Conference game of the year. Baker's win also snapped a five-game Viking winning streak. The Wildcats finished both halves strong. A 10-2 run at the end of the first half gave Baker a 32-30 lead. In the final minute of the game, a three-point play by senior center Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, ended a Viking rally and gave Baker a 79-74 lead. Senior point guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka finished the game by making three free throws. Watkins made five three-pointers and tied his career-high as 6 News Lawrence taped the game for an upcoming feature on the hometown star. Watkins was the 6 News Lawrence Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002. Junior forward Josh Flett of Wellsville and Dos Santos came of the bench to lead Baker's inside game with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Dos Santos also had a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots. McDonnell and freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe had 10 points apiece and McDonnell had a game-high five assists. However, Redeker's fourth and final assist was likely the most memorable. With less than seven minutes remaining, Watkins grabbed a long rebound to spark a three-on-none fast break and passed left to Redeker at the three-point line. Redeker tossed an underhand lob to the basket which the 5-foot-10-inch McDonnell grabbed for a two-handed alley-oop dunk and a 64-54 lead.
Jan. 22 Watkins, Roberts score in double figures versus Culver-Stockton Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence scored 13 points and freshman forward Marc Roberts of Salina added a career-high 12 points as Baker fell to Culver-Stockton 72-50 Jan. 22 in Canton, Mo. Roberts scored the 12 points in just 10 minutes of play. He made four of six field goal attempts and all four free throws, and also grabbed four rebounds. Senior center Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
Jan. 17 Four score in double figures as 'Cats complete sweep with 74-54 win Baker outscored Graceland 51 to 32 in the second half and four players scored in double figures in a 74-54 victory Jan. 17 in Baldwin City. The 20-point margin of victory was the 'Cats widest since defeating St. Mary 67-43 on Nov. 7. Baker shot 60-percent in the second half and limited the Yellowjackets to 30.8-percent for the game. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka led the Baker offense with 13 points, six assists and five steals, and made six of seven field goal attempts. Seniors Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden and Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had 12 points apiece. Dos Santos had seven blocked shots and Tenbrink had a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe had 10 points two days after tallying 26 points in an 81-80 victory over Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. Ten different Wildcats scored.

The Wildcats overcame a 30-foot bank shot by Lindenwood on a four-point play with 11 seconds remaining with Pedro Dos Santos's last-second field goal after grabbing an offensive rebound. Redeker, a freshman from Olpe, racked up 26 points. It tied the mark Watkins set a week earlier against Central Methodist for the most points scored by a Wildcat this season. Redeker's six three-pointers tied his own season-high he set 10 days earlier versus Benedictine. Watkins had 16 points. Senior point guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka had a season-high nine assists. Senior Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had 12 points and seven rebounds and senior Luke Harris of Dodge City had a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Evan Wright of Wellsville had three steals.
Freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence had his third straight game as Baker's leading scorer with 15 points in a 67-56 loss to Evangel Jan. 12 in Baldwin City. Baker trailed by 15 points at two points in the first half but stormed back with an 11-0 run early in the second half. Baker pulled within one with eight minutes remaining before Evangel pulled away. Watkins' streak marks the first time this season Baker has had the same leading scorer for three consecutive games. Watkins has averaged 20.3 points per game during the streak, but trails freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe and senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, for the team scoring lead. Dos Santos had 12 points and two blocked shots. Senior Luke Harris of Dodge City had 10 rebounds, the fourth time this season he has had a double-digit rebound total. Freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence followed up his 26-point performance versus Central Methodist with 20 points in an 80-56 loss at Avila University Jan. 10. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka had five assists, boosting him to fourth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference in that category. Jan. 8 Watkins scores 26 in near-upset Freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence racked up 26 points, the most by a Baker Wildcat this season, as Baker fell to Central Methodist 80-76 Jan. 8 in Baldwin City. Twenty of Watkins' points came as Baker outscored CMC 40-38 in the second half. The 6'2" guard made five three-pointers, just missing the season-high set by classmate Darin Redeker of Olpe three days earlier in a win versus Benedictine. Watkins also had six rebounds. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka added 11 points and made over half of his field goals while also tying his season-high in assists with seven. McDonnell has scored in double figures in eight games this season, tied for most on the team. Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
Jan. 5 Hot-shooting 'Cats hold on for first conference victory Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe made six of eight three-point shots as Baker defeated Benedictine 69-67 Jan. 5 in Baldwin City. Benedictine jumped out to an eight-point lead until Baker went on a 20-5 run midway through the first half, spurred by Redeker's first two baskets. The Wildcats held a 41-35 advantage at halftime, but Benedictine responded with a 9-0 run early in the second half to take the lead. Soon after, Redeker went on another tear with four three-pointers in a seven-minute span, the first three on assists by freshman Evan Wright of Wellsville, as Baker held a nine-point lead at several times midway through the second-half. The Ravens narrowed the lead to one in the final minute, but senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka made a free throw for Baker's final point. Redeker's 18 points was a game-high and the eighth time in the last 11 games that the 6'3" swingman has scored in double figures. McDonnell added 13 points. Wright had a game-high four assists and senior Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden had a game-high eight rebounds. The win gave Baker its first Heart of America Athletic Conference victory of the season and handed Benedictine its first conference loss. Dec. 30 Redeker scores 21 to lead 'Cats in San Diego Classic Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe lead the Wildcats with 21 points in the San Diego Classic Dec. 30 as Baker fell to Ottawa University 68-62. It was the second 20-point game of Redeker's career and the seventh time in the last 10 games that the 6'3" swingman has scored in double figures. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka added 12 points and five assists. Senior Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden had eight rebounds.
Dec. 6 Flett, Redeker not enough to upset No. 18 Jewell Junior Josh Flett of Wellsville and freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe scored in double figures, but couldn't lead Baker to an upset of No. 18 William Jewell College Saturday in Liberty, Mo. Flett had 12 points and six rebounds and Redeker added 10 points. Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had a game-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman Ross Thompson of Ottawa came off the bench to score nine points and grab seven rebounds. The Wildcats have no more games until the San Diego Classic on Dec. 30.
Dec. 4 Five score in double figures in loss to No. 18 MNU Twelve different players scored, including five players in double figures, during Baker's 105-81 loss to No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene University Dec. 4 in the Wildcat's home opener. Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe scored 15 points including three three-point field goals at crucial moments during the game. The other four Wildcats to score in double figures were junior Josh Flett of Wellsville, senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, seinor Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden and freshman Marc Roberts of Salina. It was Baker's first home after an 11-game road swing to start the season, and Collins Center was nearly filled to capacity. MidAmerica was ranked 10th in the preseason poll before falling to 18th in the Dec. 2 poll. Baker's next opponent will be William Jewell College Saturday, Dec., in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals are ranked No. 8 in the latest poll.

Nov. 29 Free throws not enough in 70-58 loss to host The Wildcats made a season-high 26 free throws but weren't able to upset the host team of the Briar Cliff Thanksgiving Classic in a 70-58 loss. Baker only missed eight free throws in the game, led by freshman Evan Wright of Wellsville making all six attempts. Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe came off the bench to score 10 points. Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, had eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka again dished out six assists. McDonnell and Wright had three steals apiece.
Nov. 28 Tenbrink charts 12 points, 10 rebounds in 66-63 loss Senior Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden had his best game of the year to date with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in a 66-63 loss to Hastings in the Briar Cliff Thanksgiving Classic. Tenbrink made all six of his free throw attempts, grabbed nine defensive rebounds and also blocked two shots. Junior Josh Flett of Wellsville also had 12 points. Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, added 10 points. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka had a game-high six assists with six points and six rebounds.
Nov. 20 McDonnell scores 14 in loss to NCAA Div. II Washburn Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka scored 14 points against his hometown college, NCAA Div. II Washburn University, in a 101-56 loss. McDonnell, an All-Heart of America Athletic Conference selection last season, made five of nine field goal attempts. Freshman Evan Wright of Wellsville had seven points and five assists.
Nov. 18 Redeker scores 24 as smaller lineup defeats Saint Mary Freshman Darin Redeker of Olpe scored 24 points in his first start of the year as a smaller lineup defeated Saint Mary 86-77 in Leavenworth. The three-guard line-up of Redeker, freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence and senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka led the 'Cats in scoring. Redeker made five of his seven three-point attempts. Watkins shot even better, scoring 19 points on just eight field goal attempts. McDonnell added 10 points. The smaller lineup didn't keep the 'Cats from outrebounding the Spires 48-43. Junior Josh Flett of Wellsville had eight rebounds and senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil had seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Nov. 15 Harris totals 17 points, eight rebounds versus Dana Senior forward Luke Harris of Dodge City had another big game, totaling 17 points and eight rebounds in a 94-74 loss to host team Dana College in the Nebraska/Kansas Challenge in Blair, Neb. Harris made six of eight field goals and all five of his free throw attempts. Freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe had his second-straight 16-point game and made four of six three-point field goal attempts. Senior guard Brandon McDonnell of Topeka had seven assists.
Nov. 14 Freshman Thompson charts double-double against Midland Freshman center Ross Thompson of Ottawa charted his first double-double of his collegiate career with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 99-67 loss to Midland Lutheran University in the Nebraska/Kansas Challenge. Freshman guard Darin Redeker of Olpe tied Thompson with 16 points and made three three-point field goals.
Nov. 11 'Cats fall 76-74 to Swedes despite Harris' double-double Senior Luke Harris of Dodge City had 13 points and 12 rebounds, but couldn't lead the 'Cats to a victory over Bethany College in Lindsborg. Senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka led the 'Cats in scoring with 14 points and freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence added 11. Junior Josh Flett of Wellsville also scored in double figures.
Nov. 8 Dos Santos blocks 12 shots in two-game tournament Senior Pedro Dos Santos of Goiannia, Brazil, held a block party at the Heart of America Athletic Conference / Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Challenge Nov. 7-8 in Kansas City, Mo. Dos Santos blocked four shots during Baker¹s 67-43 win over St. Mary College on Friday, then swatted eight more during a 74-67 loss to Ottawa University Saturday. The 6¹9" center also had nine points and six rebounds in the St. Mary contest. Freshman guard DJ Watkins of Lawrence led the Wildcats with 16 points and junior forward Josh Flett of Wellsville added 14 points. Senior Luke Harris of Dodge City had 10 rebounds and five assists, both team-highs. Dos Santos nearly had a triple-double against Ottawa with 16 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive rebounds, to go with his eight blocked shots. Flett chipped in 11 points and five rebounds and senior Ryan Tenbrink of Meriden had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Dos Santos made seven of eight field goal attempts and led all scorers in the season opener. Junior Josh Flett of Wellsville added 15 points. The two starting guards, senior Brandon McDonnell of Topeka and freshman DJ Watkins of Lawrence, each scored 10 points. McDonnell had four assists and Watkins had three steals.
A handful of veterans will join a host of newcomers as the 2003-04 Baker Wildcats prepare for the upcoming season. More than half the roster are freshmen, but a number of key returnees are back from last year¹s club that earned 16 wins. Returning for the Wildcats are 6¹ 9" senior Pedro Dos Santos, 6¹ 6" junior Josh Flett, 6¹ 6" senior Ryan Tenbrink, 6¹ 4" senior Luke Harris and 5¹ 10" senior Brandon McDonnell. Dos Santos led the team in scoring and rebounding last year with 11.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He set a school career record with 225 blocked shots. Flett, with 11.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, was Baker¹s second leading scorer and rebounder while McDonnell led the team in assists with 126 and averaged 9.7 points per game. Tenbrink and Harris saw a lot of action throughout last year, as well. Several freshmen will play key roles for the Wildcats this winter. Ross Thompson, a 6¹ 8" center from Ottawa, will join 6¹ 6" forward Marc Roberts of Salina, 6¹ 2" guard Chris Woolery of Princeton, 5¹ 11" guard David Trengemba of Denver, and 5¹ 9" guard Evan Wright of Wellsville, as freshmen expected to compete for playing time. "We¹ve got some solid inside guys returning as well as an experienced point guard, but we¹re going to have to rely on quite a few freshmen to step into the rotation," head coach Rick Weaver said. "Opening this season with 11 straight road games will probably produce a few interesting moments with all of the young guys on the team. As the group gets used to playing together and the freshmen work into the system, the team could develop into a pretty competitive group once we get into the thick of the conference season."
2002-03 Season Guard Brandon McDonnell, a junior from Topeka, received honorable mention All-Heart of America Athletic Conference. McDonnell led the ¹Cats in assists and was second on the team in steals and minutes played. He was one of the team¹s top long-range shooters and was third on the team in points per game with 9.6. McDonnell was seventh in the conference in assists per game.
