Aug. 19 Baker ranked No. 7 in preseason national poll - The Baker University men's soccer team jumped seven spots from the end of last season in the NAIA national rankings, to the No. 7 spot in the preseason polls.

The poll, released Aug. 19, placed the Wildcats higher than any other school in the Heart of America Athletic Conference or Region V. Baker is also the highest-ranked team in Kansas or any bordering state.

The Wildcats were ranked No. 14 at the end of the 2002 season after playing in the national tournament. Despite the loss of 10 players, including two All-Americans, to graduation, head coach Ron Pulvers believes the 2003 squad could be even better due to returning players like first-team all-conference forward Luke Parrott and an excellent group of freshman.

"We have a lot of strong players returning to our best recruiting effort in my tenure," Pulvers said. "This class is deep and very complete. We will have the material to be very effective."

2003 Season Preview - After graduating a very successful and talented senior class that finished 2002 ranked No. 14 nationally, 2003 could be considered a rebuilding year for the Baker men's soccer team - but head coach Ron Pulvers doesn't expect the Wildcats to play like a rebuilding team.

Of the 10 seniors on the 2002 team, six were starters and three were All-Americans. Kelly Wolverton and Eric Taylor will no longer wear the Baker uniform after combining to win the Heart of America Athletic Conference MVP, Region V MVP and the last three conference defensive players of the year awards. Despite the heavy losses, Pulvers is unfazed.

"We have a lot of strong players returning to our best recruiting effort in my tenure," Pulvers said. "This class is deep and very complete. We will have the material to be very effective."

A talented junior class will lead the team. Defender Matt Trumpp and midfielder Davy Phillips were starters in 2002 and picked as captains by their teammates for 2003. Forward Luke Parrott was named first-team all-conference. Midfielder Michael Garven made huge strides in 2002 and played the entire 90 minutes of the NAIA National Tournament.

Added to that strong class of juniors and senior defender Jason Belisle is a deep recruiting class. Pulvers expects fleet-footed freshman Marty Johnston to help the 'Cat attack, as will freshman Adrian Salazar.

"Our system is predicated on collective soccer, and is clearly the foundation for how we want to compete," Pulvers said. "We may not be as stylish, with the loss of experienced players, but we will be effective. When this group adjusts to the demands of the college game, we will be extremely dangerous."

Pulvers never takes long to rebuild. Baker has won four conference titles in his seven years and has been ranked in the Top 25 every year. The Wildcats won't have to worry about qualifying for nationals in 2003 - as a host school, they receive an automatic bid. Still, the players know they can't relax.

"To be as good as last year's team, we're going to have to work hard every day and never let up," Phillips said. "Leadership is going to be our biggest test, so it's up to our returning players to lead on and off the field."

The Wildcats will have plenty of leadership on the sidelines, with four former Baker players standing alongside Pulvers. The head coach calls Jason Hooper, a Baker assistant coach since 1995, a "key tactician and motivator." Bobby Renneisen was the 'Cats team captain in 2001 and Pulvers said he adds a fresh tactical perspective.

The final two coaches are well known to the rest of the conference. Eric Taylor was the 2002 conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Kelly Wolverton returns as a student-assistant, after a highly-decorated career in which he was named conference defensive player of the year as a sophomore and junior , team captain for three years and Region V MVP in 2002. Both were All-Americans last season.

Phillips said the team won't hesitate to listen to their former teammates.

"They've earned our respect," Phillips said. "They have the knowledge and experience of what it takes to be All-Americans."
