August - Second-year head coach Jennifer Wright has brought in seven players in her first full season of recruiting at Baker, and over half of those players won high school regional championships last season. Pitcher Kendra Cody, a freshman from Longton, took her team to the Class 2-1A state tournament this year and received fourth place. Leslie Kersting, a freshman from Topeka, was part of a 5A regional champion team and will play outfield and first base. Amanda Lee, a freshman from Gardner, was also part of a 5A regional champion team and will play outfield. Jana Smith, a freshman from Topeka, was part of a 6A regional champion team and placed third at state. Smith will pitch and play outfield. Wright signed three other players: Julie Allison, a freshman from Bartlett, will play second base and outfield. Junior Bridget Bargmann from Topeka, a transfer from Highland Community College, will play shortstop. Jessica Maxwell, a freshman from Chetopa, will play middle infield. The seven recruits will join seven veterans when the ÕCats start the 2004 season March 4 with a scrimmage against Maple Woods Community College. BakerÕs first game will be at the Oklahoma City Invitational March 12 Ð 13. May 20 - Two members of the softball team were named Heart of America Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes for their academic success during the 2002-03 academic year. Seniors Megan Nelson and Jen Smothermon fulfilled the criteria set by the conference. The criteria are a minimum GPA of 3.40; a minimum of 60 semester hours, five semesters, and attended the nominating institution for at least two semesters prior to being nominated; and must be a varsity sport participant, having made a significant contribution to their team and school. April 30 - Outfielder Megan Jones, sophomore from Shawnee, led a quartet of Wildcats on the All-Heart of America Athletic Conference team. Jones was named first team. Shortstop Jen Smothermon, senior from Topeka, and outfielder Pam Miller, freshman from Valley Falls, were named to the second team. Pitcher Megan Nelson, senior from Marysville, received honorable mention. Baker finished the season tied for eighth place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and had a 19-15 overall record.
