Season Preview - Though a lot of players are unchanged from the 2002 season, there will be a noticeable difference in the way the 2003 women's soccer team plays the game. First-year head coach Nate Houser is modifying the team's set-up and attitude to be more aggressive, and also implemented a more demanding off-season workout program to increase the team's physical fitness. "We're not going to sit back anymore, we're going to go out and attack to score some goals," Houser said. Houser will be able to focus on creating an aggressive offense with several key defenders returning. In fact, he has so much confidence in his defensive players that he has reduced the number of defenders in the set-up so an additional player can focus on offense. Senior midfielder Becki Cargo said Houser's demanding off-season program is giving the Wildcats another edge. "He wants us to be able to play 90 minutes of soccer, so endurance will be an advantage," she said. Houser said a lack of endurance may have been the cause for some defeats in 2002. "A lot of games were lost 2-1 or 1-0 and that can sometimes be attributed to fitness because of goals in the last 20 minutes," he said. Though the players are largely unchanged, Houser expects the Wildcats to improve because of the changes. "My expectations are pretty high," he said. "They already have a lot of talent, and I'm going to be pushing it in a different direction." Houser is familiar with Baker and NAIA-level soccer. He graduated from Baker in 1994 after a very successful collegiate career in which he was a two-time first-team All-American. He was drafted by the Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League and traded to the Kansas City Comets. As a Comet, Houser's career soared to even greater heights. He was a member of the championship team in 1997 and an All-Star in 1999 and 2000. He is now assistant captain. Houser is not going to rely on seniors for on-field leadership unless they have shown they are deserving. "I want to create an atmosphere where athletes become leaders because of their ability to lead and not just because of their age," Houser said. The two players who have exhibited the most ability to lead, Cargo and senior Kelli Leach, do happen to have the age. "I have lots of confidence in Becki and Kelli," senior Kate Badenoch said. "They have always had leadership capabilities, since their freshman year."
May 20 - Three members of the women's soccer team were named Heart of America Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes for their academic success during the 2002-03 academic year. Senior Beth Tindle and juniors Emily Apple and Becki Cargo fulfilled the criteria set by the conference. The criteria are a minimum GPA of 3.40; a minimum of 60 semester hours, five semesters, and attended the nominating institution for at least two semesters prior to being nominated; and must be a varsity sport participant, having made a significant contribution to their team and school. The three were also named All-American Scholar-Athletes in November 2002.
