Wildcats sweep home opener
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Baker University won both games of a doubleheader Friday against the Univesity of St. Mary to open their home schedule.
Senior Logan Peck (San Diego, Calif.) pitched the distance in the first game, holding the Spires to three hits over seven innings. Peck struck out three for his first victory of the season.
Baker scored one run to open the first game, and added single runs in the third and sixth innings to win 3-0.
With one on and no outs in the top of the seventh, Peck's pitch was hit in the right field center gap, where centerfielder Danny Cast (Lenexa, Kan.) made a game changing catch.
With the wind pushing the ball further towards the gap, Cast leap from his feet catching the ball just before hitting the ground and saving what would have been sure extra bases. From there Peck closed out the game.
In the second game, the Wildcats gave up a run on an errant throw that was kicked when St. Mary's Cody Newman was attempting to steal second, allowing the runner from third to score easily.
Baker responded in it's half of the inning scoring two runs with Tim McConn (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Kyle King (Tulsa, Okla.) driving in a run.
Pitcher Jeremiah Johnson (Gardner, Kan.) pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win. Jacob Landis (Grantville, Kan.) worked the final out of the sixth and entire seventh inning for the save.
