April 22 | Burd cools off Avila, Wildcats take series finale
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -
Junior Nick Burd allowed two runs over seven innings and senior Tim McConn hit a two-run home run, guiding the Wildcats to a 7-2 win over No. 25 Avila University in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Sauder Field.
Burd (3-2) slowed down the Avila bats, scattering five hits and striking out one, on his way to his first complete game of the season.
McConn's home run in the third inning was a no-doubter, nearly clearing the batting cages over the right-field fence. The Wildcats scored three more times in the fourth inning to extend their lead to six at that time.
In the first game, the Eagles scored six times in the final two innings, diminshing any chance of a comeback for the Wildcats. Freshman Joe Kaup (3-3) pitched a complete game.
The win in the second game helped the Wildcats salvage a four-game series against the Eagles, the No. 1 ranked team in latest NAIA Region V Poll. Avila came from behind in game one on Saturday to beat the Wildcats, and defeated Baker 13-3 in game two.
Baker (22-17; 13-11 HAAC) will conclude its four-game series against MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan. on Tuesday, before wrapping up regular-season play with a four-game series against the Benedictine Ravens, beginning on Saturday.
