Sept. 9 | No. 10 Graceland squeaks by
One play spoiled a steady second-half performance by Baker University's defense on Saturday at Liston Stadium.
After Baker scored to take the lead for the first time, Graceland responded with a 60-yard reception by Donva Louder to set up the winning touchdown in the Yellow Jackets' 21-17 HAAC victory.
The Wildcats took the lead on a 14-play, 71-yard drive, capped by Micah Mason's two-yard run with 4:51 remaining in the fourth quarter to put Baker ahead 17-14. Graceland regained the lead less than a minute later.
Freshman quarterback Mack Brown, who completed 18 of 26 passes, was intercepted by linebacker Chris Bell, who returned it deep inside Wildcat territory to thwart a Baker rally. It was Brown's second interception of the nighDSC_0147.jpgt.
With 1:49 left in the first half, Brown threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver James Hensley to pull Baker within three points.
The Wildcats were strong defensively. Graceland quarterback Clayton Braddock was flushed from the pocket numerous times.
On the first play from scrimmage, Braddock took off down the sideline. It would set up Graceland's first score. Graceland's drive stalled and the Yellow Jackets were forced to kick a field goal. Baker blocked the field-goal attempt, but a running into the kicker penalty gave the Yellow Jackets new life.
It was the first home game for the Wildcats this season and the first on the new field surface.
