Sept. 23 | 'Cats grounded by Crusaders
Baker University's defense keyed the first two victories in 2006, but the Wildcats failed to foil Evangel University on Saturday at Liston Stadium.
Evangel racked up 467 total yards on offense and rolled to a 24-0 HAAC football victory over the Wildcats.
The Crusaders were led on offense by junior tailback Shedrick McClenton, who rushed for 212 yards and had two touchdowns. He doubled Baker's offensive production.
McClenton scored the first touchdown shortly before the end of the first quarter. On Baker's next possession, quarterback Mack Brown's pass was intercepted by sophomore Von Dixon, who easily returned it to give the Crusaders a 14-0 lead.
With the ground attack working, Evangel dominated with its ball control. The Crusaders held the ball nine minutes longer than the Wildcats in the second half. Baker had one drive over four minutes the entire game.
Offensively, Baker could not get started. Brown, a freshman from Liberty, Mo., completed 10 passes for 70 yards and threw three interceptions.
Rushing, the Wildcats were led by junior Seth Williams, who carried eight times for 33 yards.
Baker's only chance would have to be a quick stop and score to start the second half. However, Evangel came out and marched 72 yards on 18 plays, killing nine minutes off the clock.
With the loss, both teams are now 2-2 overall.
Midway through the fourth quarter, freshman Danny Pike, linebacker from Lawrence, Kan., pursued a run and injured his left leg. It is not known the condition at this time. Pike was carted off the field.
On the following play, Evangel running back Ryan Polite, was injured and suffered an injury to his right knee.
Baker will play next week on the road against Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
Stats will be up when made available.
