Oct. 21 | Baker shuts out Avila for 500th all-time victory
Baker University claimed the 500th win in the football program’s history with a 27-0 shutout of Avila on Saturday night at chilly Liston Stadium.
It was the Wildcats’ first shutout since 2002 and their first home win in 2006.
The Wildcats, who snapped a four-game losing skid, jumped to a 7-0 lead after sophomore Spencer Curran returned a blocked punt 20 yards for a touchdown after Avila’s opening drive stalled at the Eagles’ 39-yard line. Sophomore Drake Taylor penetrated the Avila line to block David Sloan’s punt with 12:24 left in the first quarter, resulting in the Wildcats’ fourth touchdown of the season on a blocked punt return.
Baker, averaging 66.1 rushing yards for the season, finished with 155 yards on the ground. Sophomore Richie Bryant had 15 carries for 73 yards to lead the ground attack for the Wildcats (3-5 overall and 3-5 in the Heart of America Conference).
Defensively, junior linebacker Micah Mason recorded 13 tackles to lead the Wildcats. He had a three-yard TD run with 12:39 left in the third quarter for Baker’s final score.
Baker scored twice in the second quarter. Brad Fawcett connected with Tylor St. Clair on a 14-yard TD pass on a fake field-goal attempt with 12:11 left in the first half. Quarterback Mack Brown had a one-yard TD plunge with 6:31 left.
Avila, led by Laurence Subelka’s 105 rushing yards, dipped to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in the conference. The Eagles, 0-6 all time against Baker, finished with 188 yards total offense.
The Wildcats are off next weekend before returning to action on Nov. 4 at Culver-Stockton. Baker will close its season on Nov. 11 at home against Lindenwood. Both games will kick off at 1 p.m.
