Nov. 4 | Baker unable to pull out come from behind win
Ryan Smith had two attempts at winning the football game Saturday afternoon, but a missed field goal and bad snap would allow Culver-Stockton to win 20-17 in overtime on their first possession.
Baker fell behind early but rebounded in the second half scoring 17 unanswered points to put themselves in line for the win.
Culver tied the game with over three minutes, but the Wildcats drove to the 32-yard line where the Wildcats would set up for a game-winning field goal attempt. However, a bad snap forced Brad Fawcett to throw the ball away, sending the game to overtime.
Culver-Stockton would only move the ball to the 11 setting up the 30-yard game ending field goal by Tom McDaniel.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-6 overall and in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Baker’s 17 points came by a variety of ways for the Wildcats in the second half. Cornerback Eric Allen intercepted his fifth pass of the season and returned it 40 yards to tie the score at 10-10.
To start the second half, the Wildcats drove 60 yards in 13 plays on their opening drive with Smith hitting a 37-yard field goal.
On the ensuing possession, the Wildcats would recover a fumble and scored on the first play as quarterback Mack Brown found receiver James Hensley in stride from 48 yards out to put Baker ahead by seven.
Brown, freshman native of Liberty, Mo., had his most effective game as quarterback for the Wildcats. He finished with 174 yards and a touchdown, completing a season high 18 of 29 passing.
Culver-Stockton jumped to the 10-0 first half lead with quarter Jimmy Peyton throwing one of his two touchdowns and McDaniel kicking the first of his three field goals.
The Wildcats would then start their 17 point scoring assault against Culver-Stockton. The lead would hold up until McDaniel kicked the tying field goal with 3:58 remaining.
In overtime, Baker gave up the field goal on Culver’s possession, but lost yards on their possession forcing them to kick a long field goal to extend the game.
Smith’s 42-yard field goal would sail wide left ending the game, and the Wildcats’ hope at finishing the season with a .500 record.
Baker wraps up their season at home next weekend against Lindenwood University. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. at Liston Stadium.
