Nov. 11 | Second-half effort fuels Baker to 23-10 victory in season finale
Fueled by a dominating effort in the second half, Baker University capped the 2006 season with a thrilling 23-10 come-from-behind victory over Lindenwood University on Saturday at Liston Stadium.
Down 10-0 at halftime, the Wildcats outscored Lindenwood 23-0 in the second half en route to their first win over the Lions since 2002. Baker scored the go-ahead touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter when sophomore defensive end Andrew Patch, of Overland Park, pounced on a fumble in the end zone by Lindenwood quarterback Ben Kisner. On third-and-16 from Lindenwood’s three-yard line, senior defensive tackle Travis Viehweg jarred the ball loose from Kisner on a punishing sack and fumble recovery for a touchdown. The recovery for a TD and freshman kicker Derek Doerfler’s PAT gave Baker a 13-10 lead as the Wildcats were relentless in the final quarter.
Baker, which managed 70 yards offense in the first half, compiled 203 yards total offense in the second half while limiting Lindenwood to 68 yards offense in the final two quarters.
Baker freshman quarterback Mack Brown, of Liberty, Mo., completed 24 of 36 passes for a career-high 210 yards, including 105 yards in the third quarter, and two touchdowns. Brad Fawcett, a freshman wide receiver from Grapevine, Texas, had nine catches for 93 yards. His 18-yard reception with 12:05 left in the fourth quarter gave Baker a 20-10 advantage.
Junior receiver Mark Kabbany, of Spring Valley, Calif., had six receptions for 93 yards. His 13-yard TD reception with 10:40 left in the third quarter pulled the Wildcats within 10-6.
With 2:44 left in the contest, Doerfler, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., boomed a 47-yard field goal to give Baker an insurmountable 13-point advantage.
Senior linebacker Jeremiah Gress, of Lawrence, secured the victory with an interception at Lindenwood’s 40-yard line. Junior linebacker Brad Page, of Paola, also had an interception in the win.
