Baker Soccer “A new Direction”
The Baker University Men’s Soccer program is moving in a new direction. For the first time ever, the program will be run by a player it has produced. Nate Houser (’94) has been named the Director of Soccer for the University. This new job includes being the head coach for both the Men’s and Women’s programs. Coach Houser has spent the last five years as the head women’s coach. Under Houser the women’s program has grown from a squad of 15 players to one of 35, which includes a JV team. Last years women’s team made the Region V playoffs and received top 25 votes under Houser’s’ direction. The Women’s team has also produced 2 All Americans and 5 first team All Heart of America performers in the last three years. Coach Houser is excited to continue this type of success with a men’s program that has had 26 NAIA All Americans and 40All-Region players in it’s history.
After graduating from Baker, Coach Houser played professionally for 12 years in both the MISL and the A-League. During this time he entered the coaching profession at the youth level and attained his USSF B license. Upon his retirement from playing in 2005 he completed his USSF A license course. Houser’s time spent as an ODP Age Group Director, Director of Coaching and the time spent building the Women’s program has prepared him for this great challenge.
The season ahead looks to be a very exciting one as the Men and Women both look to move forward from the playoff appearances they made last year. A new alumni group has also jumped on board to support the Wildcats. Both teams are looking at a difficult non conference schedule as the men face off against defending National Champion Azusa Pacific, and the women face perennial top 10 Point Loma Nazarene at Laguna Beach High School early next season. These games will give both programs an early glimpse of where they rank nationally.

Oh what a night
It took close to 110 minutes of high paced football for the Baker Wildcats to finally pull out it's first play-off win since 2004. Baker went behind early in the second half to a Lindenwood strike from Ivan Mijatovic. Travis Moore(pictured), a team captain and player who is getting better game by game, returned into the match and tied things up with 16 minutes left on the clock. The match would go back and forth until finally a moment of brilliance from Matt Germain. Germain flicked the ball over a Lindenwood defenders head and calmly slotted the ball past the Lindenwood goalkeeper with 4 minutes left to play in the second overtime period. The Baker fans instantaneously stormed the field and celebrated with the Lads in Orange (who were wearing white).
Next up for Baker is the regional semi-final at Graceland University on Tuesday. Kick-off at Graceland has yet to be determined. Baker lost the conference championship decider at home to Graceland last weekend and will be looking for an improved performance against the current National Champions.
|
The Play-offs are here
The game is set. The Wildcats will play the Lindenwood Lions tomorrow (Saturday) night in Liston Stadium at 7pm. Missouri Baptist lost to the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) and allowed Lindenwood to become the 5th seed in the regional tournament. UIS now claim the 6th seed.
The winner of the Baker / Lindenwood match will play at National Champions Graceland University in the regional semi-final on Tuesday night. Saturday is Baker's final home game of the season. If they progress, all other matches will be on the road.

Conference Champions Crowned at Baker
On Saturday night the National Champions from Graceland University rolled into town with a conference championship on the line. Graceland needed at least a tie and Baker needed a victory to be crowned 2007 Conference Champions. After a shaky first half where neither team rarely got much going this deciding match came alive at the beginning of the second half when Graceland opened the scoring. For most of the second-half Baker would attack and come up short-handed as the Graceland defense showed why they have only conceded one goal in all of their conference matches this season. In the final ten minutes Graceland would counter-attack and score two more goals to end up running away with a three nil victory.
The Baker Wildcats now wait to see who they will compete against in the first round of the NAIA Regional Tournament. The boys in orange finish the season with a 12-6 record. More information to follow.

Wildcats Back on Winning Trail
After a disappointing week last week the BU Wildcats bounced back in resounding fashion with a 4-0 win on the road at Missouri Valley College Wednesday. Jon Baldwin and Matt Hodges scored in the first half and Elliott Harvey and Micah Nelson (pictured) completed the scoring in the second half.
The Wildcats, who are now ranked 30th in the nation, are 12-5 overall and 6-2 in conference. They host current national champions and number 8th in the nation Graceland University in their final regular season match in Liston Stadium on Saturday night. Kick off is at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live online to Baker fans across the globe.

Wildcats prepare for Final Week of Regular Season
After a disappointing two defeats last week, the Baker Wildcats prepare for the most important week of the season. A team that was coasting towards the post-season has now put themselves in a fight for survival position. A tough match on the road at Missouri Valley College awaits the squad on Wednesday before they return to Liston Stadium on Saturday night to face the reigning National Champions Graceland University.
The Wildcats are now ranked 4th in region V and are 11-5 on the season. Please watch this website for updates on the games. |
Germain logs Regional Honors
Matt Germain has been named the Region V Offensive Player of the Week . Germain notched a total of eight points last week in two games. Against Avila University, Matt scored three goals and added one assist. In a 4-1 win over Central Methodist University, Germain chipped in one assis t.
Baker is now 11-3-0 this season.

Baker University fell to local Kansas City rival’s Mid-America Nazarene University on Tuesday afternoon. The match was played at MNU and was a drab affair. Baker was lethargic and rarely managed to get anything going. The only goal of the match was scored by John Richards in the first half. Mid-America were full value for the victory.
Coach Koch added, “Our boys didn’t show up today. A performance like that is inexcusable. Our players were complacent and were looking over MNU. Hopefully this is the reality check that we needed. If you don’t outwork your opponents in the HAAC you are not going to win many matches. We now have a confident Benedictine coming into town and need to win to get ourselves back to the top of the HAAC standings”.
The match against Benedictine is in Liston Stadium on Friday night at 7:30pm.

Wildcats recover from slow start on the road
The Cats traveled to Fayette, MO Friday night to face Central Methodist and found themselves a goal down off a strike from Franso Riviera in the 11th minute. The Wildcats responded with an excellent free-kick from Tom Lowndes to tie the score 1-1 at half time. A re-charged Wildcat team scored three goals in the second half from Lowndes, Jon Baldwin and Travis Moore to run away with a 4-1 victory on the road. The CMU Eagles prove to be a handful for the Wildcats and the boys in orange were made to work incredibly hard to maximize Longo points.
The Wildcats are now 11-3 and 5-0 in conference play. They have the weekend off and play next on Tuesday 3 p.m. at Mid-America Nazarene University

#16 in the nation Baker wins again
Liston Stadium witnessed a polished performance by the Baker Wildcats on Wednesday night. Minus strikers Sebastian Koepf (day-to-day injury), Luke Haidarovic (out indefinitely) and Gerard Grehan (ineligible this season) the team were still able to score 11 goals against the Avila University Eagles.
Josh McDaniel (3) (pictured), Matt Germain (3), Kome Okiomah (1), Jon Baldwin (1), Spencer Petty (1), and two own goals off of Tom Lowndes crosses provided the scoring for the Wildcats. Avila replied with a goal from Josh Loden. Ryan McAloon picked up his fifth yellow of the season and will have to sit out Baker’s next match Friday night at Central Methodist University. Kick-off is at 7pm.
Baker are currently ranked 16th in the nation and 2nd in Region V. Assistant Coach Michael Garven added that “the game was an entertaining match full of excitement for the fans and it was great to see all of our younger players get a lot of minutes tonight”. The Baker Wildcats were able to rest lots of players and are now 10-3 on the season.

BAKER SOCCER WINS 5TH MATCH IN A ROW
After confusion all week long about the game time and location of the match at Missouri Baptist University the Wildcats finally headed out to St. Louis on Friday night for their Saturday match at MBU. Without Owen Barnhart (suspended) and Carson Gill (club commitments) a make shift defense held the Spartans to very few goalscoring opportunities. Matt Griffin (pictured), a freshmen from Olathe (Kansas) fought through back spasms to play his first full college game in the heart of the defense. He was ably supported by Captain Ryan McAloon, and Matt Hamilton and Travis Moore - who both played in unfamiliar full back positions.
Josh McDaniel opened the scoring in the first half on a penalty kick only to see MBU equalize in the middle of the second half. Up stepped Matt Griffin to score the winner on a fantastic header. Sebastian Koepf was unlucky on several opportunities and a rather lethargic BU team were happy to return to Kansas with the victory. "The spirit in the group is very high and the team did what they needed to get the victory. However, we are not playing great football at the moment and will need to get better for our remaining conference matches" added Coach Koch.
Up next for the now 9-3 Wildcats is a conference match against Avila University at home on Wednesday October 10th. Kick-off is at 8pm. The game will be broadcast live on internet radio. Please click on the team schedule to listen to the match.

The No. 21-ranked Wildcats (8-3 overall, 3-0 in the HAAC) scored two unanswered goals after trailing 1-0. Sebastian Koepf scored the first goal — his sixth of the season. The second half continued with Baker attacking and Jewell on the counter-attack. Elliott Harvey connected on a wonder strike in the 53rd minute for the decisive goal.

McAloon Named Player of the Week
Senior captain Ryan McAloon led his team to 2 victories this week on the road at Lindenwood (1-0) and at home against Culver-Stockton (5-0). McAloon was a major contributor to a defense that earned 2 shut-outs and limited their opponents to very few goalscoring opportunities. For his efforts Ryan has been name HAAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Lowndes hat-trick leads Baker to victory
Baker returned to Liston Stadium on Saturday for a match against Culver-Stockton College. First-half goals from Tom Lowndes (pictured) and Sebastian Koepf gave the Wildcats a two goal lead at the break. Lowndes got the ball rolling again in the second half, then Matt Germain made it four, and Lowndes completed his hat-trick with a penalty in the final few minutes. The 5-0 victory was Baker's largest win margin of the season. Alex Burton and Aaron Williams combined for the shut-out.
Next up for the Wildcats is a local derby at home against William Jewell College. Kick-off is at 4pm at North Park on Tuesday October 2nd.

Kansas City duo give Baker big-time road win
A volley in the final minute of the match from junior Jon Baldwin (pictured) (Johnson County Community College) off of a cross from sophomore Elliott Harvey (Shawnee Mission South HS) was enough to give Baker University a win over conference rivals Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri last night. After a spirited come-back from the Baker Women's team got the night rolling for the Wildcats the Baker Men's completed the double over the Lions with a smash and grab last minute winner. An eventful match, where both teams had ample opportunities to win it, went down to the wire. Thankfully the boys in orange dug it out and Baldwin provided a smashing winner.
Freshmen Alex Burton got the shutout in goal, and was supported by fantastic displays from Ryan McAloon in defense, Matt Hodges in midfield, and Sebastian Koepf up front. Freshmen Tom Lowndes did well in the midfield and Spencer Petty made a very solid first team debut. Next up for the Wildcats, who are now 6-3 and ranked 21st in the nation, is Culver-Stockton College. The match is this Saturday September 29th in Liston Stadium. Kick-off is at 7pm. Coach Koch added "I was very proud of the boys tonight. They pulled up their sleeves and ground out a big-time victory on the road. There is uncertainty as to whether Baker have ever beaten Lindenwood in Saint Louis before, but either way this group of players created a bit of history tonight and I am very proud of them".

Wildcats Win at Home
A Josh McDaniel penalty kick, a Sebastian Koepf strike, and a Tom Lowndes (pictured) wonder free-kick were enough to earn the Wildcats a 3-1 victory over the Columbia College Cougars Saturday afternoon at Liston Stadium. A lackluster performance was still enough to beat a hard-working Cougars team. The Wildcats play Lindenwood University away on Wednesday at 7:30 to start off conference play. They will be back home in Liston on Saturday against Culver Stockton at 7:00 pm. |

BAKER HANGS ON TO TOP 25 NATIONAL RANKING
For the second consecutive week Baker Men's Soccer is ranked in the top 25 in the nation. The team lost a double-overtime heart-breaker to Southern Nazarene University last week, but still hung on to a spot in the national poll. The Wildcats sit in 22nd position and need a victory this Saturday at home against Columbia College to remain in the national rankings. |
Baker Men's Soccer Loses two Tough Matches on the road
The last week has been a roller-coaster for the BU Men's Soccer team. After being ranked 19th in the nation in last weeks poll the Wildcats went on the road to face the 10th and 11th ranked teams in Oklahoma City. The weekend began badly with a 3-0 loss to 11th ranked Oklahoma City University where Baker was outplayed for 90 minutes. The combination of the long road trip, a tough schedule, and intimidating opponents led to a very lackluster performance. Coach Koch added "Our boys were very very poor tonight. We didn't show up against a quality team, and hopefully learnt a lesson that will help us as we progress through the season".
The following day the team headed to #10 Southern Nazarene University. The team put in an inspired performance only to fall short in double over-time. Coach Koch added, “This performance was a vast improvement and something that we can build on. SNU is a National Championship caliber team. To play and hang with them for close to 110 minutes should give our team a lot of confidence. Yet again we didn't put together the polished complete performance that we are looking for, but we should feel very confident in our abilities after a very gritty performance on the road. I would not be surprised if SNU won the National Championship".
Next up for the lads in Orange is a home encounter against Columbia College. Kick-off is at 1pm this Saturday in Liston Stadium.

When the NAIA national rankings came out this week the 4-1 Wildcat Soccer Team was pleased to find themselves at #19 after not being ranked previously this season. Baker's gritty play has also earned them a #3 regional ranking. The Cat' hit the road this weekend for games versus Oklahoma City and Southern Nazarene.

Defensive Player of the Week
Carson Gill of #19 Baker University is this week’s Region V Defensive Player of the Week. Gill, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, led the Wildcats to a 3-0 week against two ranked opponents. Baker defeated Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College 3-1 and Grand View (Iowa) College 2-1.
|
BAKER MEN COMPLETE MEMORABLE WEEKEND
The #19 ranked Baker Wildcats completed yet another come from behind victory Saturday evening in Liston Stadium. The match was an intense affair with several yellow cards being dealt out by the referee and a red card to each team. Grand View College, the #12 ranked team in the nation, opened the scoring in the 40th minute through Mirsad Kazic. Baker responded instantly with a goal from Luke Haidarovic after a great through ball from Tom Lowndes.
The intensity picked up in the second half as both teams tired after their second match in 24 hours. Baker finally found the break through in the 75th minute off of a diving header from Jon Baldwin (pictured). Kome Okiomah created the opening to deliver in a great ball for the winner. The Wildcats record improves to 4-1 after a very satisfying weekend.
Next on the schedule are two matches in Oklahoma City against currently ranked 16th in the nation Oklahoma City University and the 9th ranked Southern Nazarene University.

Baker Battles Back - Yet Again
For the second game in a row, the Baker University Men's Soccer team found themselves trailing at the half. In what is becoming a trend for this year's squad, Baker (3-1) earned a hard fought victory, 3-1 over Hannibal LaGrange (1-2) of Missouri by finding its way in the 2nd half.
After trailing at the half 1-0 on an own goal by Owen Barnhart, Baker came to life during the final 20 minutes of the game, scoring all 3 goals en route to the victory. Travis Moore jumpstarted the comeback with a brilliant free kick from the left side of the 18 yard-box. Moore curled it over the wall and into the net to level the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Sebastian Koepf was played through on a breakaway by Josh McDaniel. Koepf showed great composure, slipping his team high 3rd goal of the season past Jeff Jelinek of Hannibal. The final goal came in the 90th minute when Koepf again was sprung free by Matt Germain, only to be taken down in the box, and awarded a penalty kick. McDaniel calmly buried the penalty, sealing the games fate.
Baker has a quick turnaround for its next game as it plays the 12th ranked team in the nation, Grandview College tomorrow at 5pm in Liston Stadium. This match has been moved to the Stadium from the scheduled North Park location . |

Sophomores Save Wildcats
A pair of goals from sophomores Sebastian Koepf and Matt Germain (pictured) saved the Baker Wildcats on Saturday. Down a goal after a lackluster first-half display the Wildcats slowly started to take over the game in the second half and earned a hard fought victory over the Bethel Threshers. Koepf got the ball rolling off of a cross from junior Micah Nelson and Germain grabbed the game winner when freshmen Matt Griffin was able to head the ball across the box to him on the six yard line. Coach Koch added that "our performance tonight was very disappointing, but all credit is due to the players for pulling out a tough road win when we were nowhere near our best. Bethel is a good squad and they're going to be a handful for many teams this year. We will have to be a lot better if we want to be successful next weekend against Hannibal LaGrange and Grand View College". The Cats next contest will be at 4 p.m Friday Sept 7 at Liston Stadium. |
Men Get the Ball Rolling vs. KWU
The Baker Boys finally fired on all cylinders Thursday night. After two tough pre-season scrimmages and a gut-wrenching last minute defeat to Park. BU was able to collect its first win of the season at Liston Stadium. Matt Hodges, Sebastian Koepf, and Kome Okiomah all scored as the Wildcats convincingly beat the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes 3-0. A large crowd cheered on the team and the new Barmy Army clad, with their Baker Soccer scarves were out in full force. Their support added to the fun of the evening where freshmen Alex Burton (pictured) was able to collect his first college shutout. Next up is a difficult 7pm kickoff on Saturday September 1 at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. |

Baker Loses Thriller 3-2
On Saturday the Baker Men’s Soccer team traveled to Parkville, MO for an always thrilling battle with the Park University Pirates. The match had to be decided in the closing seconds as Freshman Simon Senfuk of Park hit the game winner with a mere 9 seconds left. The Wildcats trailed early until senior Midfielder Travis Moore scored an equalizer in the 41st minute. In the second half the Wildcats took the 2-1 lead when Senior Josh McDaniel connected on a header in the 55th minute, assisted by Senior Jordan Martin. The Cats’ would keep their lead until the 86th minute when Park scored on a penalty kick by Mirsad Dzilic. The dagger would come in the closing seconds and would be enough for Park to take the early season victory. Coach Alan Koch said “All in all it was a very good first performance, but a very disappointing result.” The Wildcats look to rebound immediately as they play host to Kansas Wesleyan on Thursday night at Liston Stadium. |
