CroatianBaker Baseball Defeats Croatia

The Baker Wildcats Baseball team played host Tuesday night to the Croatian National All-Star team in an exhibition game at Sauder field.  The Croatian National Team has been on a recent tour of the Midwest, in addition to facing the Wildcats; Team Croatia also has exhibition games scheduled with other area college teams, including the University of Kansas, St. Mary’s University, Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Following its exhibition tour, Team Croatia will head for the European Baseball Championships, Sept. 15-16 in Barcelona Spain, and will look to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics.  On Tuesday, Team Croatia led most of the way and looked as if they were going to escape with a one run victory.  However, the Wildcats would not give in, in the bottom of the ninth after a Baker batsman was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded to tie the score, the Wildcats would get their opportunity to take the lead and grab the win.  With the infield in, Baker would get the game winning run on a high chopping ground ball hit by Kyle King to the Croatian second baseman that proved too tough to handle.. The final tally was Baker 5, Team Croatia 4.  Coach Phil Hannon said, “We used the majority of our pitching staff and they did a good job, especially working out of some jams.”  Baker will not play again in live game action until mid-February, and Wildcat fans are sure to be entertained by a very talented line up and solid pitching rotation that is sure to be a threat this year in the Heart of America Conference.
