Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame Member Charles R. Bonebrake

1993 inductee Baker University Charles R. Bonebrake ’39 Who has brought honor to the University through his own athletic achievements, service to his country, and as an outstanding educator and coach. Attended Lawrence High School and was all-league basketball as a senior. Also played football and ran track. Attended Parsons Junior College, named to all-state team both years in basketball. Also played football and ran track. Lettered in both years at Baker in basketball and track. In basketball, was third in track, was conference champion pole-vaulter both years. Pole vaulted before fiberglass poles were used and cleared 12 feet, 9 inches at a time when world record was 14 feet. Member of the Baker University Athletic Association and served as officer of class and Secretary of B-Club. Received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1939, and later served in the Armed Forces During World War II. Taught mathematics and coached football and track at Baldwin High School for four years. Compiled football record of 34-1-1 and track team did not lose a dual meet. Taught and coached at Vista, Glendale and Escondido high schools in California. Won numerous league championships and had many state champion athletes. At Vista High School, he started the Vista Relays after being inspired by the Baker Relays. The Vista meet has continued for over 30 years. Retired from coaching in 1972 and teaching in 1980. Lives in Vista, Calif.
