Dr. Gorby R. Martin
Who has brought honor to the University through his athletic achievements and coaching as well as his service and devotion to his alma mater
October 4, 1986
- Participated as an integral part of both the football and track teams. Played tackle from 1939-1942. Was selected member of the All-Conference Team 1941 and 1942. Along with Brother Burley, was known as part of the “Martin Bombers.”
- Lettered in track from 1940-1943, participated in the discus, shot put and javelin. Won conference championship in same events in 1940-1941-1942.
- Entered the U.S. Navy, serving as an Officer in the Pacific during a portion of World War II.
- Returned to Kansas to coach high school sports at Overbrook, Kan., from 1946-1947.
- Served as assistant coach of football, basketball and track under Coach Liston at Baker from 1947 to 1950. In 1950 returned to coaching at the high school level, coaching at St. Mary’s, Holton and Shawnee Mission North.
- In 1960, left coaching to enter UMKC Dental School. After achieving the D.D.S. degree, participated dentistry in Shawnee until August, 1986.
- Married to Eunice Philgreen, Baker Class of 1950. They have five children, all Baker graduates.
- Honored in 1977 as a part of the “Baker Family of the Year.”
- Served the University as a four-term member of the Alumni Board of Directors and was a charter member of the Baker Wildcat Booster Club. Has served on various coach selection committees as well as the committee whose purpose was to regenerate Baker athletes.
