Wendell D. Winkler

Who has brought honor to the University through his achievements in the fields of athletics and sports officiating

October 25, 1980

“Wink” lettered in football and track, and after an injury to his knee, he managed the football and basketball teams.  His athletic career at Baker was interrupted by four years of meritorious service during WWII with the U.S. Navy.  Returned to Baker in 1946 – kicked winning field goal against Kansas Wesleyan on homecoming.  Officer of the “B” Club.  After graduation from Baker, entered law school receiving LLB and DJ Degrees – 1951, while in law school, began officiating high school and college games. Since has officiated in junior colleges, the Kansas Conference, the CIC and the Big Eight. Has been chosen to officiate NAIA Championships, two Sterling Silver Bowls, the Sugar Bowl, two Sun Bowls, two Orange Bowls, and the NCAA Championships.  Presently a Big Eight Football observer of officials. Active in the Paola Methodist Church and a forceful leader in community and civic affairs.
