2006 Season

May 4 | Wildcats finish fourth in HAAC, Region V

The Baker University men's golf team overcame a rough start to the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament to finish in fourth place as a team.

The Wildcats finished fourth in HAAC, but shot 14 strokes better on day two to pull ahead of William Jewell, who they were tied with after day one. Sophomore Michael Kahler finished in a tie for second place, shooting a two-day score of 150, but fell to third after a two-hole playoff.

In the NAIA Region V Tournament, Baker shot a three-day score of 938 to finish fourth in Region V as a team, 14 shots out of third place.

Dave Tregemba shot 77-75-75 to finish in a tie for seventh place, two spots back from being named All-Region V
PJ Matulka shot 78-78-75 to finish 17th in the individual rankings.

The Wildcats will have eight members of their golf team returning next year, seeking to improve on this year's results.


April 6 | Baker has three in top-10

The Baker University men's golf team placed second in the Graceland Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Smithville, Mo. and had three players finish in the top-10 of the tournament.

P.J. Matulka and Michael Kahley tied for third place with a two-day score of 154 and David Tregemba finished eighth with a score of 158. Matulka was in the lead after the first round with a score of 73 but was brought back to the back in the second round.

The Baker "A" team finished in second with a combined score of 631. The Baker "B" team placed ninth with a score of 719. Grandview College won the event with a score of 623.

Next up for the Wildcats is the Baker Invitational on April 19 and 20 in Lawrence, Kan.

March 28 | Wildcats place ninth in first meet of year

The Baker University men's golf team got its season off to a start with a ninth-place finish in the Evangel Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday in Springfield, Mo.

The Baker "A" team tied for ninth with Evangel University with a combined score of 686. The Baker "B" team placed 13th with a score of 729. Millikin University (Ill.) and Missouri Valley College won the event with a score of 642.

Freshman P.J. Matulka was the top finisher for the Wildcats tying for 28th place overall. Matulka shot an 87 in the first round, but came back with an 82 in the second to just beat sophomore Michael Kahler for the top Baker spot. Kahler shot a 170 over the two-day tournament.

Next up for the Wildcats is the Graceland Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Smithville, Mo.

May 16 | Exon signs first five male golfers
Long-time women's coach is now men's coach

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Golf coach Karen Exon has signed her first recruiting class as men's head coach.

Exon has been the women's coach since the program was started in the late 1990s and will coach both squads starting in the fall.

Four of her first five male recruits came from northeast Kansas. She signed Tanner Christenson of Seaman High School in Topeka, Daniel Conway from Salina South High School, Chase Day from Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, Derek Donovan from Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park and PJ Matulka from Olathe Northwest High School.

Golfers fight through snow, ice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - David Tregemba and Michael Kahler fought terrible conditions to place in the top 11 at the Missouri Western Invitational Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday.

Head coach Rick Weaver said the golfers faced a strong wind on Monday and then "very adverse" conditions on Tuesday, which featured sleet, snow, and chunks of ice on the greens.

Tregemba, a sophomore from Castle Rock, Colo., tied for ninth by cutting five stokes off of his first round score. Kahler, a freshman from Palmer, Texas, tied for 11th and also cut his score on the second day.

The Wildcats placed sixth as a team.

March 8 Dan Harris, Baker University athletic director, has announced that Baker women’s golf coach Karen Exon will coach both the men’s and women’s teams beginning in the fall of 2005. Exon will succeed Rick Weaver as men’s golf coach. Weaver will step down at the end of the spring 2005 season. Exon, a history professor at Baker since 1989, started the Wildcat women’s golf program in 1997 and has guided the team to two top 10 finishes in the NAIA nationals. Harris said Weaver, who completed his 19th year as head men’s basketball coach this spring, will return for his 20th season in 2005-06.  Weaver, Baker’s career leader in victories, will enter the season with 299 wins.


2004 Season

April 22-23, 2004 Freshman Cole Esau placed seventh overall to make the all-conference team and lead Baker at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship Thursday and Friday in Springfield, Mo.

Esau, a freshman from Hesston shot a 75 over 18 holes on the first day and 38 over nine holes on a rain-shortened second day for a 113. Freshman David Tregemba of Castle Rock, Colo., was tied with Esau after the first day and shot a 41 on the second day for a 116. Freshman Matt Bigham of Gardner shot a 35 on the second day to lead the 'Cats.

Baker placed fourth in the championship with a 465, just two strokes behind third place.

April 24-25, 2003 Senior Ben Nichols led the Wildcats to a fifth-place finish at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship April 24-25 in Quincy, Ill.

With a strong second day, Nichols tied for eighth place with an 83-75 = 158 score over 36 holes. Freshman Chuck Golden shot 85-78 = 163 to place second on the squad.
