Feb. 23 | BU advances after three overtimes
In one of its most exciting games of the season, the Baker University women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the HAAC Postseason Tournament by defeating Evangel University 84-77 in three overtimes Thursday.
Baker held the lead the majority of regulation, but Evangel fought back to force extra time after trailing 29-26 at the break. The Crusaders took advantage of their superiority on the offensive glass and had 20 second-chance points to only eight for the Wildcats. However the difference was at the free throw line, where Baker was 27 of 34 (79 percent) and Evangel was 5 for 16 (31 percent).
At the end of each period, it looked as if the Wildcats had the game locked up but Evangel fought on and continued to extend the game. It wasn't until the third overtime that senior Ashley Ohlman helped put the game away. Ohlman, who had six of her 18 points in the final overtime, almost outscored the Crusaders herself.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by junior Molly Ediger who had 22 points, the majority of which came from beyond the three-point arc where she was 4 of 6 for the game. Baker almost had two players with double-doubles — sophomore Allie Heinen had 14 points and 11 rebounds while junior Emily Etcheberren had nine points and 11 rebounds.
The win advances the Wildcats' record to 17-14 and is their first win in postseason play since the 2003-04 season. Next up for Baker will be the Benedictine College Ravens in the semifinals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament. Benedictine finished the season 26-4 overall and with its 19-1 conference record, won the HAAC. The Ravens advanced by defeating No. 8 seed Lindenwood University 101-61 Thursday in Atchison. Benedictine won the two match-ups between the Ravens and Wildcats this season, winning 69-62 on Jan. 5 in Atchison and 79-48 on Feb. 9 in Baldwin City.

On a day where she and Kelly Pavlik were recognized after the game for their career accomplishments, Ohlman showed how much she meant to the program, pouring in 26 points and hauling in five rebounds. Pavlik added eight points of her own on Senior Day.
Ohlman was expecially explosive in the first half. After having the lead switch back and forth throughout most of the half, Ohlman scored two straight baskets to have Baker within three points with 1:41 left. After hitting two free throws to end the half, Baker held a slim 35-34 lead. Of the team's 35 points, Ohlman had 18.
In the second half, Baker began to impress its influence on the game. The Wildcats grabbed the lead early in the half and gradually extended it throughtout. While the Lions would whittle away at the lead, getting as close as only four points back, Baker held them off to clinch its fourth straight victory.
Junior Molly Ediger also had a solid game for the Wildcats, scoring 18 points, half of which came from beyond the three point arc.
With the victory, the Wildcats' final regular season record is 16-14, with a 12-8 record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Nov. 16 | Baker loses on the road
The Baker University women's basketball team fell by 14 to Sterling College 92-78 Tuesday despite shooting 84 percent from the free-throw line.
The Wildcats only hit 3 of 20 three-pointers, however, and were never able to make up their first-half deficit.
Baker had three score in double-figures, with senior Ashley Ohlman leading the way with 23 points. Juniors Amanda Yates and Molly Ediger followed Ohlman up with 22 and 17 points, respectively.
The loss puts the Wildcats' record at 3-2 heading into the team's match-up with Tabor College at home Nov. 22. After the Tabor game, Baker will be on the road until Jan. 9 when it plays Evangel College. |

Nov. 14 | Wildcats split Classic games
A two-day tournament ended with two different results as Baker University’s women’s basketball team went 1-1 in the annual Baker Classic last weekend at the Collins Center.
The ’Cats’ first match up against Park University was a thriller. Down 42-41 at halftime, the Wildcats outscored the Pirates by four points in the second half to close out the victory. A team effort helped propel BU ahead as five players finished in double figures, one of which recorded a double-double. Senior Kelly Pavlik scored a season high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as juniors Amanda Yates and Molly Ediger followed behind with 12 and 10 points each. Junior Emily Etchebarren and sophomore Allie Heinen both recorded 11 points a piece.
Saturday’s game versus Ottawa University wasn’t the same team effort from the night before. Baker fell behind 35-28 at halftime and even a late game surge couldn’t propel the ’Cats past the Braves, ultimately losing 66-61. Three Wildcats finished in double digits: Junior Amanda Yates with 16 points and 10 rebounds; junior Molly Ediger, 13 points; and senior Ashley Olhman, 12 points, seven rebounds. In the end, it was the 28 turnovers that hurt Baker, even though the ’Cats forced 23 of their own.
Baker’s record now stands at 3-2 overall with their next competition scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Sterling College in Sterling, Kan. |

The Wildcats shot 55 percent from the field for the game, while shooting 56 percent from three-point range. They also held St. Mary's to just a 32 percent shooting and only 14 points in the second half.
A combination of good shooting and solid defense paved the way for the win against the Spires, with junior Amanda Yates dominating on offense and the boards, scoring 25 points on 11-14 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. Freshman Courtney Sutton had five steals and four assists for the Wildcats as well.

In its first two games of the season, the Baker University women's basketball team finished with a 1-1 record over the weekend at the Grand View Classic in Des Moines, Iowa
Friday's match-up against host team Grand View University proved successful as the 'Cats won 58-45.

"It was nice to finally get out and play rather than just always practicing," head coach Susan Decker said. "It showed us what we needed to work on before our next game. I was pleased Friday with our game against Grand View.
"The biggest thing for us was to play and as a staff see who played well together and complimented each other on the floor. but we're still trying to work some things out."
