Athletic Hall of Fame 2001 Inductees

Kenneth "Ken" D. Jones, 1970

Graduated from Columbus (Kan.) High School in 1966. Lettered in football and wrestling. Named All-Southeast Kansas League in football as a senior.

Enrolled at Baker in 1966 and became a four-year starter at center for the football team. Selected as a member of the honorable mention All-KCAC team as a junior and senior. Was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Graduated in 1970 with a degree in physical education in 1980. Earned a master’s in secondary counseling from Pittsburg State University.

Began teaching and coaching career at Baldwin Elementary and served as assistant wrestling coach for two years and three additional years as head coach in the district.

During his 21-year coaching career, coached five state championship wrestling teams, five state runner-up wrestling teams, two third-place teams and 17 individual state champions. Overall record in dual meets was 237-71-2. His teams also won 33 invitational tournament titles.

Honors include: 4A Wrestling Coach of the Year four times, the state (All Classes) wrestling coach of the year two times, and the Region 5 wrestling coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association in 1990.

Has served in numerous leadership positions with Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, including a two-year stint as president. Also coordinated local, state and federal programs with Kansas Department of Education officials. Has served as the Chairman of the Columbus Sports Hall of Fame Committee and as a member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Is married to Baker classmate, Barbara Roberts, ’70, and together they have a daughter, Ellen Lewis ’96.

Harold L. Reade, 1928

Graduated from Moran (Kan.) High School in 1924. Played football four years, serving as team captain as a junior and senior.

Enrolled at Baker in the fall of ’24 and made an immediate impact on the football team where he lettered all four years and was selected for all-league honors for three years. Served as team captain his junior and senior years. On campus, was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Earned a bachelor’s degree in 1928. In 1944, earned a master’s degree from Kansas University.

Began his teaching and coaching career at La Harpe (Kan.) High School in 1928. In 1930, moved to Nevada (Mo.) High School where he guided the football team to four Southwest Missouri League Championships in five years.

In 1935 was hired by Shawnee Mission Rural High School to teach government and constitution. He coached track for one year, golf and basketball for 16 years, and football for 20 years.

His football teams won 110 games, lost 38 and tied 11 while winning eight Northeast Kansas League Championships and one Sunflower League title. His basketball teams won 235 games while losing only 76, a winning-percentage of 76 percent on the way to nine NEK League Championships and two Kansas State AA Championships. His golf teams won eight league championships.

Though known as a strict disciplinarian who wouldn’t allow players to suit up for games unless their grades were “C” or above, he was widely respected by his former athletes. His 1946-47 basketball team had eight of its 10 squad members selected for membership in the National Honor Society.

Served as City Councilman in Overland Park for eight years and was elected as the council’s first president. Served as a Johnson County Republican Precinct Captain, was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the United Methodist Church and several education groups and societies.

Married classmate Thelma Roberts and together they had one son, Dr. H. Karl Reade. Coach Reade passed away March 1974.

Steve R. Sublett, 1958

Attended and graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Earned a total of six varsity letters in the sports of football, basketball and track.

Enrolled as a freshman at Baker in 1954. Participated in track in 1955 and for four years in football, where he earned a letter his senior year. Also was an active member of Zeta Chi fraternity.

Graduated in 1958 with an AB degree in zoology in 1960. Earned a Bachelor of Science in education at the University of Kansas and a Master of Science degree in education in 1962.

Taught chemistry and science at Lawrence High School from 1960 to 1993, where he served as assistant track coach from 1960 to 1968 as head cross country coach from 1963 to 1993 and as head girls’ track coach from 1978 to 1993.

Coaching record includes coaching 24 individual state champions in track and cross country and five state championship track teams.

Honors include: winning a 1977 Meritorious Teaching Award from the Westinghouse Science Foundation, being named the 1979 Kansas Track Coach of the Year in Girls’ track, being named the 1980 Regional Girls’ Track Coach of the Year, being nominated for the National High School Girls’ Track Coach of the year in 1980 and receiving the 1989 National High School coaching Award from Scholastic Coach magazine.

Served for 37 years as an official at the KU Relays and as the KU Relays Referee in 1982.

Member of the United Methodist Church. Past President of the Kansas Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. Member of the Zeta Chi Board of Trustees, 1964 to present. Received the Zeta Chi Alumnus of the Year. 1994 and a Special Service Award in 2000. Elected Clerk of Wakarusa Township in Douglas County Kansas, 1994 and 1998.

Married to Pat Corken, class of 1957. Together they have two children, Susan Sublett Newton ’81 and Steve C. Sublett.

Dale Gene Williams, 1958

Attended high school at Bonner Springs High School. Lettered in football and track. Earned first-team all-conference honors and was named to the All-KC Area Team in football.

Enrolled at Baker in the fall of 1954. Played and lettered all four years in football. Also participated in campus activities as a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and sang in the University Choir all four years.

Graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education. Shortly after, began a career in teaching and coaching. In 1965 earned a Master of Arts in guidance and counseling from the University of Kansas.

During his career, coached seven sports: Basketball, football, track, baseball, softball, volleyball and tennis. Since 1967 has taught and coached at Fort Osage (Mo.) High School

Honored on 13 occasions as Conference “Coach of the year”. Additionally, was recognized twice by the Independence Examiner as Coach of the Year. Honored by the Kansas City Area/Sports Connection as their Coach of the Year for girls sports.

Has three children: Robert Hillman Williams, Karre Wiederholt Kelly and Sheri Anne Williams.
