University celebrates history, accomplishments with an eye to the future
Baker University faculty, students and staff officially opened the academic year at the traditional fall convocation on Sept. 18 at Rice Auditorium on the Baldwin City campus.
President Pat Long and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Brian Posler honored the University’s history and recent accomplishments while providing a glimpse to future initiatives. Student Senate President Katie Thurbon also was a featured speaker and commended her fellow students for their involvement in campus activities.
During the State of the University address, President Long outlined four strategic goals as part of “Baker 2020 and New Beginnings”:
- Baker University will achieve regional and national recognition and a reputation for quality academic programs, faculty, staff and students.
- Baker University will reach enrollment capacity through increased on-ground and expanded online offerings and outreach.
- Baker University will have the resources necessary to sustain and grow the academic mission.
- Baker University will prepare students to be effective global citizens, bringing positive change to their communities.
During convocation, President Pat Long recognized the contributions of a Baker University faculty member and staff member with the presentation of two awards
Darcy Russell, ’80, professor of biology, received the Faculty Service Award, which is now named the Darcy Russell Faculty Service Award in her honor. The award salutes a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding University service evidenced by active and effective participation in the University community, which enhances the University or student and faculty experience or both.
Jeremy Portlock, MBA ’05, director of the physical plant, received the Piper Rainen Outstanding Staff Award. The honor recognizes and encourages the extraordinary efforts of staff in their dealings with the student population at Baker.
