H1N1 (Swine Flu) Update from Student Health Services

December 2009

Student Health Services at Baker has received 400 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. A clinic was held on campus Tuesday, Nov. 17, and 165 students received the vaccine. We will continue to offer the vaccine to students until the supply has been depleted.

Campus has experienced cases of influenza-like illness since the beginning of the school year. We continue to monitor those students with symptoms and have sent students home who live within reasonable traveling distance or have advised students to self-isolate in their residential living quarters.

Students are encouraged to speak with their faculty, staff, coaches and hall staff if diagnosed with an influenza-like illness. Students have been given handouts and been advised to refer to the CDC information page on its Web site and the information within this Web site for signs and symptoms. Information can be found at www.cdc.gov/H1N1, www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_colleges.htm and www.kdheks.gov/H1N1.

The CDC advises that students, faculty and staff who become infected with the virus should keep away from others as much as possible until at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

We continue close contact with the Lawrence Douglas County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for guidance.

Please feel free to contact us with your questions and concerns. Baker University is committed to the safety and health of its students and employees.
