General Requirements for Teacher Licensure
Each student pursuing a degree in Education and subsequent teacher licensure must complete a core set of courses pertaining to Education. All courses in Education and CO 115 must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Before admission to the School of Education, students must take the following courses, which are required introductory courses:
- ED 100 Teaching as a Career
- ED 242 Introduction to Education
Upon the completion of an application to the School of Education undergraduate program, successful completion of the introductory courses and receipt of satisfactory scores on the C-Base or PPST standardized test, students are then able to enroll in further Education coursework.
The following education courses are required of all education students:
- ED 309 Evaluation Techniques for the Classroom
- ED 320 Education Field Service Practicum
- ED 321 Education Field Service Practicum
- ED 343 Educational Psychology
- ED 345 Psychology of the Exceptional Child
- ED 367 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas
- ED 462 Education Orientation Internship
- IS 199 Diversity in Education Interterm
Education students also take the following courses:
- CO 115 Oral Communication
- PY 111 General Psychology
- PY 243 Human Development
Upon completion of all Education and content area requirements, students will take part in the Professional Semester, which consists of 12 hours of student teaching and three hours of methods. Students in preK-12 programs will take six hours of elementary student teaching and six hours of secondary student teaching.
- ED 440 Elementary & Middle Level Methods or ED 460 Secondary School Methods
- ED 450 Student Teaching in the Elementary School or ED 470 Student Teaching in the Secondary School or ED 480 Student Teaching at the Middle Level
To obtain teacher licensure, graduates must pass the PLT standardized test and a content area test.
