History is one of the fundamental fields in the liberal arts tradition. To study the past provides a solid foundation for understanding the present and predicting the future. By studying history at Baker University, you’ll gain a broad understanding of American and international history, research methods, presentation skills and historical appreciation.
Preparation for Career or Graduate School
Baker University history majors and minors have many career options. Many go on to teach. Many go into other areas with the broad knowledge and critical and research skills obtained in history courses. Many go on to pursue graduate degrees, including law school or historical subfields such as diplomatic, social, gender, labor, American, European or oral history. Graduate work is also the next step toward a career in archival management, museum administration and document and artifact restoration, preservation and conservation.
Hands-On Regional Research
Baldwin City and the surrounding area harbor sites with considerable historical significance. Battlefields leading up to the Civil War are found throughout Douglas and surrounding counties. Westward expansion touched the history of Kansas and our University, providing many opportunities for hands-on regional research. As Kansas’ first university, Baker has played a role in Kansas’ inception and development for more than 150 years. The history program’s optional emphasis in public history goes beyond the traditional history curriculum to allow you to take advantage of all the area offers and experience history firsthand.
